GLENDALE -- Austin Snelling might be listed as a tight end on the Glendale High football roster, but he played the role of running back pretty well against the Yoncalla Eagles on Friday night.
Snelling, a junior who moved to the backfield thanks to a rash of injuries in Glendale's first two games, rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries during the Pirates' 26-12 win over Yoncalla in the Mountain View Conference opener for both teams.
"This is a lot better than playing lineman," Snelling said. "Last year I was on the line all the time and was always down in the trenches. This was a lot easier, getting to run instead of blocking all the time."
The Pirates (1-2 overall, 1-0 MVC) made things look easy late in the fourth quarter, a stark contrast to their first two games where they were outscored 33-0 in the final frame during losses to St. Mary's and Glide. That definitely wasn't the case against Yoncalla, which rallied to knot the score at 12-all before the Pirates won it down the stretch.
"The big focus for us this week was to play four quarters," Glendale coach Steve Prock said. "When they tied it up, we didn't panic. And then when Austin got that big run, they kind of self-destructed."
Snelling's big run was indeed big. After Yoncalla put together an eight-play, 52-yard drive to tie the game at 12-all with 9:45 left in the fourth quarter, Snelling ran around the right side and up the sideline on an option pitch for a 56-yard scoring run that gave Glendale the lead for good.
Yoncalla got the ball back on its own 20 and fumbled the ball on its first play, and Glendale recovered the ball on the Eagles' 19-yard line. Five plays later, quarterback Will Hissong ran into the end zone on a sneak up the middle for the final margin after Snelling's two-point conversion run.
"We fought our way back in the game, and then mistakes, turnovers and miscues buried us in the end," Yoncalla coach Bill Shaw said. "But I have to be happy about the effort we put out. We rode what we had as long as we could. I guess the rodeo expression is 'ride it until it bucks you.'"

Yoncalla (0-3, 0-1 MVC) rode running back Caleb McDaniel as long as it possibly could, and the senior carried the Eagles back into the game. He rushed 26 times for 133 yards and a touchdown and, at one point, carried the ball on 15 consecutive Yoncalla plays.
"It's amazing how when everybody in the whole place knows that's the one main thing we've got, he can still be successful," Shaw said. "And I have to give a lot of credit to (fullback) Ben Thompson and (running back) Kyle Arter, because they did a good job blocking out of the backfield for us."
Glendale's first-half effort, however, forced the Eagles to play catchup.
Yoncalla's opening drive ended when the Eagles fumbled the ball away on their own 20. Snelling followed with runs of 13 and 7 yards, and he scampered into the end zone untouched on the second carry for a 6-0 Glendale lead after the two-point conversion attempt failed. The Pirates held up on defense, then produced a 16-play, 74-yard drive that finished with a 10-yard jaunt from Snelling with 7:11 left in the first half.
The Eagles battled back, though, cutting its deficit in half on a 12-yard TD run from McDaniel with 2:31 left in the third quarter. Yoncalla forced a three-and-out on Glendale's next possession, and McDaniel carried the ball on the first seven plays of Yoncalla's next drive to move the Eagles to the Glendale 14. After a timeout, Peterson shot up the middle for a 14-yard TD scamper to tie it, but Glendale stopped Colton Kingery on a QB keeper on the conversion try to leave the score tied.
That's when Snelling broke off his long touchdown run. And after Hissong followed with his TD plunge with 5:51 left, Glendale's ensuing kickoff went low, deflected off a Yoncalla player and back to the Pirates to essentially seal it.
"The team's tempo just went way up," said Snelling of his long TD run. "They all got their blocks and saw me running down the field. They were just hyped. I was ecstatic too, even though I didn't show it."
Glendale continues conference play on Friday when it hosts Oakridge. The Eagles head to Central Linn of Halsey for another conference contest, also on Friday.
