Roseburg rallies from two-game deficit to snap skid



GRANTS PASS — Eighth-ranked Roseburg rallied from a two-game deficit and defeated the Grants Pass 20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 27-25, 15-9 on Tuesday in a Southwest Conference match.

The Indians (16-9, 6-3 SWC) got 13 kills from junior outside hitter Katelyn Powers, and five kills apiece from Cadee Kinne and Anna Palotai. Nikki Bassett made 25 digs, Palotai had 14 assists, Courtney Hutchings 12 assists and Jade Berry-Cabiao four blocks for points.

“We pulled a little Muhammad Ali ... rope a dope, but got out of it,” said Roseburg coach Bruce Myers. “It obviously took us a little while to get back into tempo. Once we got back into the flow of the match we did much better. We became smarter hitters, and reduced our hitting and serving errors.”

Seven players suspended for two matches returned to the team.

Roseburg, tied with ninth-ranked Sheldon for second in the conference, hosts third-ranked North Medford Thursday night at Robertson Memorial Gym in its regular season finale. The Black Tornado is unbeaten in SWC play.



<b>FAR WEST LEAGUE

Douglas 21-25-25-25

North Bend 25-16-16-20</b>

NORTH BEND — Katy King powered home 17 kills to go with 26 digs as the Douglas dropped North Bend in four games Tuesday.

Courtney Bush had 11 kills, three aces, and three blocks for the Trojans (8-1 Far West League). Asia Blankenship had nine kills, Alaina Findlay had 27 assists, three aces, and three kills, and Jenny McClelland 23 digs.

North Bend got 12 kills and 11 digs from Alexandra Mapeski.

Douglas hosts South Umpqua Thursday in the regular season finale. A win would clinch the outright Far West championship for the Trojans.



<b>S. Umpqua 22-25-23-25-15

Brookings 25-17-25-23-10</b>

BROOKINGS — Brookings-Harbor’s Stephanie Kerr had an eye-popping 31 kills and Danni Oleson had 16 blocks, but South Umpqua got the last word in a back-and-forth Far West League battle.

Taylor Whitmore led the Lancers (7-2) with 13 kills, Katy Bumgarner had 32 assists, Amanda McCarley hadseven blocks and Brittany Bice added 13 digs.

“Our main challenge was digging up Stephanie Kerr’s hits,” S.U. coach Sarah Gray said. “She dominated the net. But we did a nice job mixing it up later on.”

Kerr also added seven blocks and Molly Vance and Daniele Ambrosia combined for 38 assists for Brookings.

S.U. can clinch a share of the league title with a win at Douglas Thursday.



<b>SUNSET LEAGUE

Gold Beach 19-25-20-25-15

Glide 25-19-25-21-9</b>

GLIDE — Kortney Loosli tallied a team-high six kills and Angela Bryant and Brittany Eifert each had 19 digs for the Wildcats, who watched the Panthers rally from a one-game deficit.

Bryant and Eifert each had five kills and four aces and Eifert added 21 assists for the Wildcats.

Molly Hockema and Miranda Hunnicutt had nine kills and three service aces each for the Panthers, who were forced to play from behind on both the third and fourth game before rallying for a victory.

“I think that the games we won, we played very consistent,” Glide coach Misti Bucich said. “We let them back into it with way too many hitting errors.”

The Wildcats (1-9) continue league play on Thursday at Bandon, the only Sunset League team Glide has defeated this season.



<b>C. Christian 25-25-25

Reedsport 8-16-18</b>

JACKSONVILLE — Rachelle Buck had 10 kills as the Challengers swept the Braves and clinched the Sunset League title Tuesday.

Amanda Beers contributed five kills and four blocks, Erika Thorpe 26 assists and Becca Sellers seven kills for Cascade Christian (11-0).

Reedsport (9-2) is scheduled to play a non-league match at North Bend tonight and concludes Sunset action next Tuesday at Glide.



<b>MT. VIEW CONFERENCE

Glendale 25-25-25

N. Douglas 23-22-22</b>

DRAIN — Glendale put even more distance between first- and second-place in the Mountain View Conference with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 sweep over North Douglas Tuesday.

Gretchen Owens was held to nine kills, but played well up front, netting eight blocks — four of them stuffs. Rori Lovemark added 11 assists and Samantha Prock had six digs.

Elyssa Emel had a team-high 10 kills to go with three aces and two blocks for the Warriors (10-4). Stephanie Hescock had 17 digs and Mariah Wilson contributed across the board with five kills, 13 assists, six digs, and six aces.

“They played well,” North Douglas coach Beckee Toy said. “We passed well, dug well, we just had too many hitting errors.

North Douglas will host Oakland in the conference playoffs at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner will play at Glendale (13-1) on Tuesday.



<b>Oakland 15-17-25-25-15

Monroe 25-25-9-22-11</b>

MONROE — Oakland emerged from a tight Mountain View Conference match to clinch the final league playoff berth.

Molly Earls had seven kills and three blocks and Amber Huckaby chipped in 12 digs for the Oakers, who rallied from a two-game deficit and a four-point hole in the fifth game.

Amanda Humphreys added six kills, 16 digs and six aces, including four aces that helped Oakland rally in the fifth game.

Oakland will play at North Douglas, the No. 2 team from the MVC, on Saturday. The winner earns an automatic berth in the Class 2A state playoffs and will play either Central Linn or Oakridge for the league’s No. 2 or No. 3 playoff seed.



<b>Oakridge 25-25-25

Yoncalla 23-18-20</b>

OAKRIDGE — Heather McDonald managed 10 kills, six digs and four assists for Yoncalla, but Oakridge ended the Eagles’ season with a Mountain View Conference sweep on Tuesday.

Amanda Thorp added nine kills, seven digs and six assists and Hayley Reynolds added seven kills, four blocks and seven digs for Yoncalla, which finished ther season with a 4-10 conference record.

“We have a team that’s already excited to play together again next season,” Yoncalla coach Bev Smith said. “We did some stuff this year that the girls didn’t know they could do. Next year, these girls will do a lot of good things once they’re back together again.”



<b>Central Linn 25-25-25

Riddle 9-23-13</b>

HALSEY —The Cobras swept the winless Irish in a Mountain View Conference match.

Riddle finished the season 0-14 in MVC play.



<b>SKYLINE LEAGUE

Elkton 25-25-25

Pacific 21-16-23</b>

ELKTON — The Elks captured a share of the Skyline League title with a sweep over the Pirates.

Jessica Ruble made seven digs and had 24 service points, Robin Whipple contributed 13 assists and 11 points, Steph McMillan eight kills and Kaitlin Gomes six kills.

Elkton (9-1) was missing two starters — RaeJeanne Evoniuk and Theresa Dunas — who are attending a national FFA convention.

“We played pretty well, considering we had a different lineup,” said Elkton coach Samantha Whipple.

The Elks will face co-champion Days Creek at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Sutherlin High School in a seeding match for the Class 1A state playoffs.



<b>Days Creek 25-25-25

UVC 10-13-22</b>

WINCHESTER — The Wolves got nine kills from Stephanie Rogers and Allison Eichmann, sweeping Umpqua Valley Christian and claiming a share of the Skyline League title at Umpqua Community College.

Erin Hemphill added 18 assists for Days Creek (9-1).

Freshmen Samantha Seamans had eight assists and Beth Hallman had four kills to lead the Monarchs. Mindy Paris added three blocks and Ashley Pittum had four aces.

“It was tough playing with a seven-girl roster,” UVC coach Vanessa Seamans said. “But these girls have more heart than any of the larger teams. They never gave up, they wouldn’t give up. That is all you can ask for.”
