CANYONVILLE A Sutherlin man was accidentally shot on a hunting trip Thursday after a dog stepped on a rifle, according to the Douglas County Sheriffs Office.
Darin Zyzniewski, 39, walked up to a pickup on Fate Creek Road at about 10:30 a.m. and started talking to the driver, Eddie Moss, a 59-year-old from Days Creek. Zyzniewski was in the area hunting, his nephew, Bud Osborn, said.
Moss had a loaded 30-06 rifle lying across his lap, according to a press release from the Douglas County Sheriffs Office.
As the two men were talking, Moss dog reportedly stepped on the rifle, causing it to fire through the drivers door.
The shot hit Zyzniewski in the left arm.
Moss performed first aid on Zyzniewski and took him to Falk Family Medicine in Canyonville. Zyzniewski was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center, then transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene.
Osborn said the shot grazed his uncles bicep and took out a part of his inner elbow but didnt hit the bone. It also took out about three inches of his artery.
Zyzniewski was in the intensive care unit in good condition this morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
It was not known this morning whether the guns safety was engaged. The case is still under investigation and will be submitted to the District Attorneys office.
The sheriffs office reminds people to be careful when handling firearms. The office recommends people dont keep loaded rifles inside vehicles and dont have muzzles pointing at people, though doing so is not illegal.
