Police caught a suspected car thief early Sunday after a short pursuit along Aviation Drive in Roseburg.
The incident began about 2:30 a.m., when a sheriffs deputy spotted a 1989 Subaru Wagon parked on Edenbower Boulevard at the Interstate 5 overpass and discovered it had recently been stolen from the Portland area, according to a Douglas County Sheriffs Office press release.
The abandoned car was partially in the roadway and was missing the right front tire and wheel. Deputies knew the car had been parked there for less than 30 minutes, so law enforcement officers flooded the area in search of a suspect on foot.
About 3 a.m., a deputy noticed a 1990 Toyota Camry pull out of a parking space at the Motel 6 on Aviation Drive. The driver, later identified as 26-year-old Joshua Kelly Hayes of the Portland area and the stolen vehicle suspect, left the motel and entered the Home Depot parking lot where he slowly drove around, according to the press release.
When the deputy entered the lot, Hayes allegedly sped off, running stop signs and red lights before entering the Lowes parking lot. There, police say Hayes drove over the sidewalks and damaged the cars tires.
Hayes continued south on Aviation with two deputies in pursuit. The car eventually jumped a curb and came to a stop.
The deputies arrested Hayes, who was also allegedly found with a .32-caliber handgun and ammunition. The owner of the Camry was contacted and confirmed his car had been stolen from the motel where he was staying, according to the press release.
Hayes was lodged at the Douglas County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of intoxicants, attempting to elude, reckless driving and felon in possession of a firearm. He was also held on a probation violation warrant.
