Mrs. Ann (Harland) Frankenstein



Passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, November 26, 2007. She died from complications related to a fall several days earlier. Ann was 94 years old. Ann Caroline Hand was born November 24, 1913, to parents, Frank Alonzo and Laura (Shorey) Hand. She was the last of eight children; three brothers and four sisters. All have preceded her in death. Ann was raised in Minnesota on the family farm. She attended school in a one room country school and graduated from High School in Faribault, Minnesota, in 1933. She attended teachers’ training school and taught at a country school for two years. In 1937, Ann married Dave Harland in Minnesota and together they moved to Oregon to start a new life. They lived in the Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, areas where their children, Barbara and David were born. In 1946, they relocated to the Winston/Roseburg area. Ann worked at various jobs locally. She managed the Townhouse Motel for two years, earned her CNA and worked at the Douglas County Home from 1959 to 1971. After her retirement, she and husband, Jim Miller, enjoyed renovating old homes and traveling. They also bought and ran the Casa Loma Motel for two years. In 1980, they moved to Winston where Ann was very busy with Senior Center activities and T.O.P.S. She was a founding and active member of the Dillard-Winston Methodist Church. On June 5, 1993, Ann married Edward Frankenstein, Jr. Family and friends organized and attended the beautiful wedding she had always envisioned. She and Ed were very happy together and were an immeasurable comfort to each other until Ed’s death at age 98, two years ago. Ann loved being involved in all the various family activities which included many blended family get togethers, reunions, etc. She especially loved all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In more recent years, she loved being kept apprised of their activities via the internet. Ann is preceded in death by her husbands, Dave Harland and Ed Frankenstein, Jr.; her favorite niece, Marlene and her husband, Clayton McColley of Medford, Minnesota; step-son, Charlie Miller of Yoncalla, Oregon; and step-daughter, Barbara Frankenstein Listol of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Ann is survived by her daughter, Barbara and her husband, Bob Carlson of Sun City, Arizona, their four daughters and ten grandchildren; her son, Dave Harland and his wife, Diana of Roseburg, their son and daughter, and four grandchildren; nephew, Roger Hand and his wife, Darlene, and their children’s families of Northfield, Minnesota. Also surviving Ann are the Miller step-children and their families, Patty Miller Russell of Yoncalla; Marilynn Thomas of Dallas, Oregon; Art and Pam Miller of Florence, Oregon; Dan and Patty Miller of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; and Frankenstein step-children, Ed and Lillian Frankenstein of Winston and Leroy and Francis Frankenstein of LeMoore, California. Viewing will be Friday, November 30, 2007, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses, 965 W. Harvard, Roseburg. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 1, 2007, at 11 a.m., at the Dillard-Winston Methodist Church, followed by private burial services for family only.
