FRIDAY BASKETBALL: 'Dawgs deal No. 1 Henley a scare

SUTHERLIN — The Sutherlin boys basketball team nearly took down No. 1 Henley, but a tip-in by Winston Mueller as time expired gave the Hornets a 66-65 victory Friday.

The Bulldogs held a one-point lead with 10 seconds left as Henley (5-0) forced up a shot that rimmed out. The clock seemingly expired as Mueller tapped the ball in, but one official signaled a made basket, while the other waved it off. After conversing they awarded the points and the win to Henley.

“We played good defense and made them force the shot,” Sutherlin coach Tony Martineau said. “The clock looked like it read zero, but the officials saw it differently.

“But it came down to us going 4-for-8 from the free throw line in the last three minutes,” Martineau continued. “If we make our free throws, were up by five instead of one and we have the win.”

Austin Lesveur led the Hornets, who start three players 6-foot-4 or taller, with 19 points, Mueller had 16 and Mike D’Olivo added 12. Danny Staats, an all-state high-jumper, was held to eight points. The Bulldogs outscored Henley 29-19 in the fourth.

Sutherlin, whose tallest player is 6-3, was led by freshman Bradley Seehawer’s 17 points — including all five of the Bulldogs’ 3-point field goals. Caleb Trowbridge finished with 14, Spencer Hutchings had 12, and Aric Ott had 12 for the Bulldogs (2-2).
