SATURDAY BASKETBALL: Eagles win Cow Creek Classic at the buzzer

RIDDLE — Thanks to a fortuitous bounce the Yoncalla boys basketball team came back to defeat Umpqua Valley Christian 36-35 in the closing seconds of the championship game at the Cow Creek Classic.

As time wound down, Caleb McDaniel gathered an offensive board and got the putback, producing the margin of victory for the Eagles (3-1) — who compiled 50 rebounds as a team.

McDaniel and Heath Anson each ripped down 16 rebounds and Kyle Arter added 10. McDaniel also had a game-high 13 points.

“It was a tough game,” UVC coach Jeff Fusco said. “Hard fought with a lot of lead changes. They just hit the big shot in the end.”

Levi Chappell led the Monarchs with 11 points and Michael Graham had 10.

McDaniel was named to the all-tournament team as well as UVC’s Ryan Graf, Days Creek’s Tyler Hays and Travis Fuller, and Riddle’s Brock Goldbeck.

GOLD BEACH — South Umpqua capped a busy stretch of three games in two days with a win over Class 2A power St. Mary’s on Saturday night that clinched the tournament championship.

Lancer Andrew Nale was named tournament MVP after averaging 18.3 points per game, including 18 in the nightcap. Kial Blankenship added 15 and Kevin Heintz nine for South Umpqua (4-2).

Max O’Sullivan led St. Mary’s with 18 points.

GOLD BEACH — South Umpqua held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by Gold Beach, using Andrew Nale’s 23 points to prevail Saturday afternoon.

Nale connected on three 3-pointers and Jake Grady added 14 points for the Lancers. All but one Gold Beach players scored for the Panthers, who outscored S.U. by 15 in the fourth quarter.

SUTHERLIN — A night after losing on a last-second shot to Henley, Sutherlin rebounded by beating Glide.

The Bulldogs (3-2) used a 23-9 spurt in the second quarter to take control of the game. Freshman Bradley Seehawer scored 16 points and Aric Ott and Spencer Hutchings added 10 apiece.

“It took us a while to figure out how to play against their zone,” Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said. “We didn’t have the same intensity as last night and missed a few jumpers early.”

Elliott Standish had a game-high 17 points for Glide (1-5).

ELKTON — Crow had five scorers reach double figures and took advantage of 35 turnovers to more than double up Elkton.

Ethan Thoms led all players with 19 points, Justin Derby and A.D. Belk had 18 apiece and James Husk had 14 for the Cougars, who outscored the Elks 22-4 in the second quarter.

Elkton (3-3) was led by Brent Whipple’s 10 points. Mackenzie Smith and Ben Eberhardt each grabbed six rebounds.

RIDDLE — Days Creek pulled away late in a defensive battle to claim the Cow Creek Classic championship on Saturday afternoon.

Abiyah Watkins scored 10 points and K’Dean Ramos added nine as the Wolves (3-3) outscored the Monarchs 22-15 in the second half. Allison Eichmann pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Days Creek.

Sarah Harding had a game-high 11 points for UVC (3-2), which led 15-14 at halftime.

“They shut down two of our top players and we shut down two of theirs,” UVC coach Mike Zerbach said. “We had a really good game, we just didn’t finish our fourth quarter.”

Riddle 31</b>

RIDDLE — Heather McDonald posted over twenty points for the second time this year as Yoncalla routed Riddle 58-31 in the third-place game of the Cow Creek Classic Saturday.

McDonald finished with 21 points and Amanda Thorp posted a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double. Sara Simons came off the bench to contribute nine points and six rebounds for the Eagles (1-2).

“I’ll contribute this one to our defense,” Yoncalla coach Carl VanLoon said. “We can score, but our first win came after holding a team to sub-30’s, so I will credit our defense for this win.”

Kailee Hanson led the Irish (1-4) with nine points and Andrea Stratton added six before fouling out.

GOLD BEACH — Triana Crane exploded for 24 points as South Umpqua claimed the third place trophy of the Pacific Rim Invitational.

Chelsea Duffy added 14 points and Jonna Blomberg had 10 for the Lancers, who played three games in two days.

“We came into this tourrnament looking to improve,” South Umpqua coach Andy Johnson said. “And offensively this tournament, we showed more improvement in these three games then we did all of last year. This was a great experience for us.”

Annaleisa Nadig led Etna with 16 points.

Tessa Falk was named to the all-tournament team for the Lancers, which plays Tuesday at Elmira.

HARRISBURG — Reedsport rebounded from a 35-point loss to Harrisburg on Friday with a convincing win over Culver on in the third-place game of the Harrisburg Invitational.

Hannah Smith led the Braves (3-2) with 13 points. Kelly McLain added 10 points and Leah Hoover nine for Reedsport, which outscored the Bulldogs by nine points in both halves.

Amber Wafer had six points (two 3-point field goals) to lead Camas Valley (2-2) and Christina Carter grabbed six rebounds.

Linsey Kau scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Crow.

Stephanie McMillan led the Elks (1-4) with seven points. Robin Whipple grabbed nine rebounds. Elkton was without three starters due to illness.
