ROSEBURG: Law enforcement officers and safe driving advocates will set up a display Saturday to warn of the dangers of driving while impaired.
A wrecked car from a fatal crash, a mobile impaired driving unit that officers use to process drivers suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and emergency response vehicles will be on display from noon to 4 p.m. in the K-Mart parking lot at 2757 N.W. Stewart Parkway.
Organizers say they want to raise awareness and discourage people to drive while drunk or hampered by drugs.
They also want to encourage those who drink alcohol during the holidays to obtain rides from a designated driver or other sober person.
The mobile unit will be used locally as part of a multiagency enforcement patrol scheduled from 8 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday.
The event is part of national Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month. It is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Douglas County Traffic Safety Committee, Pepsi-Cola of Roseburg, the Eugene chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Oregon State Police, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the Roseburg, Winston and Sutherlin police departments.
Last year, there were 31 traffic deaths in Douglas County. All but eight involved alcohol or drugs, said Rosalee Senger, an ODOT traffic safety coordinator.
