FRIDAY BASKETBALL: Trowbridge leads Sutherlin boys past Bobcats



MYRTLE POINT -- Caleb Trowbridge finished with 21 points and was one of three Sutherlin players to reach double figures in scoring, and the Class 4A Bulldogs broke away from 3A Myrtle Point with a big second half en route to a 68-53 victory on the first day of the Myrtle Point Tournament.

Aric Ott scored 17 and Joey Atterbury chipped in 10 for Sutherlin, which led 29-27 at halftime before using a big third quarter to take a 47-38 lead into the final stanza Friday.

Garren Hitner scored a game-high 22 for Myrtle Point and Willy Looney added 11 for the Bobcats.

North Eugene 67

Roseburg 46

EUGENE -- While containing North Eugene's top player, Roseburg was beat by other players on the No. 1-ranked team in Class 5A.

Drew Laird scored 26 points, including four 3-point field goals, and Arin VanderHoff hit three more 3s to lead the Highlanders. St. Louis University recruit Brian Conklin had 14.

"Conklin is who we focused on and held him below his average, but they had a couple of other kids step up," Roseburg coach Craig Stinnett said. "That's what No. 1 teams do."

The teams were tied at 10 after one quarter, but North went hit four shots from behind the arc in a 20-9 second-quarter run to take control of the game.

Jake Cavens and Zach Hancock led Roseburg (3-2) with 12 points each. Cavens added six rebounds and four assists.

"In 32 minutes we played well for 24," Stinnett said. "There were eight minutes here and there where we had letdowns and mistakes that cost us. When we were playing well we were right there with them."

The Indians have a week off before facing Churchill at Robertson Memorial Gym.

ROGUE RIVER -- Kial Blankenship scored a game-high 20 points and Andrew Nale chipped in 13, but the Lancers fell in overtime to the No. 1-ranked 3A team in Oregon at the Rogue River Chieftain Invitational.

Scott Morse had 19 points for the unbeaten Challengers and Jarrod Hess added 17. Ben Joffer hit a 3-point field goal for Cascade Christian with 0.9 seconds left in overtime. The Lancers then called for a timeout when they had none left, resulting in a technical foul and two free throws by Morse for the final margin.

ROGUE RIVER -- Jason Tingle scored a career-high 34 points for Douglas, but Lost River rallied from a small deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter for a victory over the Trojans on the second day of the Rogue River Chieftain Invitational.

Bryson Norton added eight points for the Trojans, who trailed by five with less than a minute remaining. Douglas pulled within two and got a defensive stop with eight seconds remaining, but the Trojans couldn't get a shot off before the final buzzer.

Tingle also had five rebounds for Douglas.

PORT ORFORD -- Jason Fishel scored a game-high 29 points and David King chipped in 14 to lead the Braves over host school Pacific on the first day of the Pacific Invitational.

Ismail Osorio added 10 points for the Braves, who blew the game open with a 27-point second quarter against the Pirates. Michael Maynard and Sean-Paul Wagner each scored 12 to lead Pacific.

ROGUE RIVER -- Bonanza's Daniel Clark and Glendale's Kyle Tate had a scoring duel in the consolation semifinals of the Rogue River Chieftain Invitational, but the Antlers had more weapons and pulled away for the win.

Tate scored a game-high 33 points, including 25 in the second half and seven 3-point field goals. Clark finished with 28 for Bonanza, which led by nine at halftime.

BANDON -- Joey Lee led Oakland with 18 points and Andrew Young and Coleton Baker each scored 10 points for the top-ranked Oakers, who rallied from an early deficit for a non-league victory over the 3A Tigers.

Baker's hustle in the fourth quarter boosted the Oakers, Oakland coach Jeff Clark said. Andrew Young hit a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining for the final margin, and Bandon's 3-point field goal attempt at the end that would have tied the game was off the mark.

Oakland continues non-league play at home Thursday against Sutherlin and next Friday against second-ranked Western Mennonite of Salem.

UVC improved to 4-2 and will face off against the Irish in Riddle on Tuesday.

Tess Bennett had 20 points for the Bulldogs. Sutherlin made a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining to take the lead.

Katherine Zuber led the Panthers with 15 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. Destiny Cowan added seven points for the Bulldogs.

BANDON -- Bandon rallied from a 22-14 halftime deficit to take the non-league win over the Oakers.

The Oakers (2-4) scored only two points in the third quarter and three in the fourth.

"We just didn't execute in the second half," Oakland coach Esther Moen said. "That's why they won and it's pretty frustrating."

Becky Butler led Bandon with 15 points and Briana Valentine added 11. Amber Dikkers led Oakland with eight points, and Alex Johnson and Julie Basque had six each. The Oakers host Sutherlin at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Ashley Prentice-Free had 19 points for UVC before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Lacy Matchett scored 19 for the Lions. UVC (2-4) plays next at Riddle on Tuesday.
