SATURDAY BOYS HOOPS: Warriors climb out of deep hole, beat North Valley



MERLIN -- Dustin Andes scored 22 of high game-high 27 points in the second half, Cameron Derrick added 15 and North Douglas, the No. 7-ranked team in 2A, rallied from a 26-point halftime deficit against 4A North Valley for a wild 60-55 non-league victory over the Knights on Saturday.

Tyler Vancil added 13 for the Warriors, who hit 14-of-15 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. Two of those came from Kyle Anderson with 1:45 remaining, snapping a 50-50 tie and giving the Warrios the lead for good.

"We almost had to learn a lesson in perseverance the hard way, but instead we learned it the fun way," Warriors coach Shane Mast said. "It's almost like we were wearing different uniforms in the second half."

Kevin Rose scored 11 to lead the Knights, who limited the Warriors to just two first-half field goals. Anderson finished with five points and a game-high six assists.

The Warriors continue non-league play Tuesday when they go north to play South Eugene's JV team.

ROGUE RIVER -- Andrew Nale scored 22 points with six assists and Kial Blankenship chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds for the Lancers, who never trailed the Panthers on their way to winning the third-place game of the Rogue River Chieftan Invitational.

Kevin Heintz added 10 for South Umpqua, which hit sic 3-pointers and outrebounded Chiloquin 30-21. Chad Rich led the Panthers with a game-high 24 points.

"We missed a lot of shots in the first half," South Umpqua coach Mike Ernest said. "But we took contol in the third quarter after we refocused. This game was a character builder for us,"

The Lancers (7-3) continue non-league play Tuesday at Cottage Grove.

CANYONVILLE -- Canyonville Christian Academy won yet another close game, this time in overtime over Prospect.

The Pilots (4-4) made 25 of 32 free throw attempts, including four straight by Kang Kim that gave his team the lead for good after Prospect scored the first four points of overtime.

Stanley Shu was 10-for-10 from the free throw line and finished with a game-high 20 points to go with nine rebounds and five assists. Kim had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Janos Kroo led the Pilots in boards with 13 and Victor Yuen scored 11 points.

"Everybody pitched in and found a way to win," CCA coach Noal Schaak said. "To win four games like this out of eight is pretty weird for me. I've never seen anything like it."

Dakota Gordon led the Cougars with 19 points. Zach Bennett and Josh Walton had 13 apiece.

BUTTE FALLS -- Camas Valley's first win of the season won it the third-place trophy from the Butte Falls Tournament as they routed the St. Mary's junior varsity.

Kurt Dever scored a game-high 16 points, Maison Cay had 15 and Eli Fisher had 13 for the Hornets (1-5). Aaron Stotler and Chase Elliott each grabbed nine rebounds.

Noah Conway led the Crusaders with 15 points.

ELKTON -- Brent Whipple scored 14 points and Ben Eberhardt grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Elkton to its second

straight win.

The Elks (5-3) jumped to a 15-4 lead after one quarter and were up 30-9 by halftime. Mario Celis added 11 points and Mackenzie Smith nine.

Damien Ramirez led Oak Hill with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

GLIDE -- Courtney Bush scored 15 points and Katy King added 13 as the Trojans beat the Wildcats in a non-league game. Bush and King combined for 12 steals.

Douglas (3-3) outscored Glide (2-4) by 16 points at the line, making 23-of-39 attempts. Angela Bryant had seven points for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats host Cascade Christian Tuesday in their Sunset League opener. The Trojans travel to Illinois Valley Monday for a non-league contest.

TRI CITY -- Chelsea Duffy finished with a career-high 19 points before leaving with an injury late in the first half after the Lancers exploded for a 29-point second quarter against the Tigers.

Jonna Blomberg had eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots and Triana Crane added eight points and 10 assists for South Umpqua (5-4). Becky Butler had eight points to lead the Tigers.

"We got out full court and made some nice decisions on the break," S.U. coach Andy Johnson said. "That was an explosion like we haven't seen here in a long time."

Duffy hurt her left leg, the same leg she suffered a season-ending injury with during soccer season, and did not return after halftime.

The Lancers continue non-league play on Tuesday when they host No. 3-ranked Cottage Grove.

MYRTLE POINT -- Sutherlin captured third place at the Myrtle Point Tournament by holding off Creswell down the stretch.

Tess Bennett had 17 points to lead Sutherlin (5-2), which went on a 10-5 run in the third quarter after a 19-19 halftime tie. Sutherlin made almost as many free throws (14) as Creswell had attempts (15).

"They made a late run at us but we hit our free throws and took care of the ball," Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said.

Katie Tique led Creswell with 12 points.

Ashley Marriott added 15 points for Glendale (6-2), shooting 9 for 11 from the line. Heidi Condon had 12 points for Lost River.

Owens, who scored 65 points in three tournament games, was named to the all-tournament team.
