SUTHERLIN Its offense forced the overtime, but it was the Sutherlin High girls basketball teams defense that won the game.
The Bulldogs rallied for a 45-40 overtime win over visitng North Valley on Tuesday night. After being held to 19 points through three quarters, Sutherlin exploded for 20 in the fourth quarter, and outscored the Knights 6-1 in the extra period.
Destiny Cowan led Sutherlin (6-2) with 13 points and Sierra Terrel-Perez added 12. Tess Bennett was held scoreless in the first half but finished with nine points.
We were not ready to play, Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said. We were basically standing around expecting to win the game by just being there. Amanda (Hutchings) and Bre (Garcia) were in foul trouble, and Tess (Bennett) struggled early.
Lauren Crawford had a game-high 19 points for the Knights.

Kaitlyn Noble led all scorers with 11 points for the Lions.
Chelsea Duffy had 10 points and Tessa Falk nine for the Lancers (5-5).
We got off to a slow start, S.U. coach Andy Johnson said. We played well after that, but you cant start slow against a team like Cottage Grove.
South Umpqua will travel to 5A Eagle Point Friday.

RIDDLE Jorden Zerbach finished with a season-high 23 points as Umpqua Valley Christian rolled over Riddle.
Zerbach hit two 3-point field goals and Ashley Prentice-Free added 10 points for the Monarchs (3-4). Ashley Pittam led UVC with five rebounds.
It was a fast paced game, Monarchs coach Mike Zerbach said. The press started to get to them in the second quarter. The girls executed the press really well.
Jordan Nelson had nine points and eight rebounds to lead the Irish.
UVC will travel to Glendale on Thursday. Riddle is off until Dec. 27 when it plays at Bandon.

Both Glendale boys and girls team will pick up non-league play again on Thursday when they host Umpqua Valley Christian.

ELKTON Robin Whipple had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds as the 1A Elks dominated the 2A Eagles in a non-league contest.
Amanda Thorp also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the Eagles were held to only one field goal in the second half. Yoncalla shot 18 percent from the field.
RaeJeanne Evoniuk added 12 points for the Elks, including three 3-point field goals.
The two teams will face off again on Thursday at the North Douglas Tournament.

MERLIN Jason Tingle scored 25 points and Tyler Clark added 10, and Douglas held off winless North Valley in double overtime for a non-league victory on Tuesday.
Tingle added 13 rebounds against the Knights, who hit a last-second 3-point field goal at the end of regulation to force overtime. The Knights won the tip in the first OT and held the ball, opting for a last-second shot that missed.
Douglas won the tip in the second overtime and scored immediately, then held on for its third win of the season.
We had an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, but they came back, Douglas coach Kevin Wilson said. It was all about getting over that hump, and the guys did that and really showed something tonight.
Travis Clark had 16 points and Ross Procktow added 12 for North Valley. Cody Walton had nine points for Douglas (3-6), which continues non-league play at Coquille on Thursday.

Chad Arter added 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Yoncalla (5-1). Mario Celis had 11 points and Mackenzie Smith 10 for Elkton, which was limited to 9-of-49 shooting from the field.
They came out with a lot of intensity in the third quarter, Elkon coach Gary Trout said. We got a little timid because they got pretty physical with us. Our kids battled, though.
Elkton (5-5) is off until Jan. 4, when it begins Skyline League play at home against Camas Valley. Yoncalla continues non-league play Thursday at the Mapleton Tournament.
