Oaklands Tyler Fugate takes a shot against the defense of Sutherlins Caleb Trowbridge during the first half of Thursday nights non-league game in Oakland. The top-ranked Oakers won, 62-51.
OAKLAND A big game on the boards helped turn Thursdays matchup between the Sutherlin and Oakland High boys basketball teams into a big win for the Oakers.
Oakland outrebounded Sutherlin 34-18 and got some big second-chance buckets in front of a standing-room only contingent at The Nut House, and the Oakers balanced scoring attack helped the top-ranked team in Class 2A pick up a 62-51 non-league victory over the 4A Bulldogs.
That was definitely huge, said senior post player Matt Dickson, who finished with a game-high 18 points to go with five rebounds. Our offense is really spread out, so we have plenty of opportunities to drive in and penetrate. And when we didnt convert, we did a great job of crashing the boards.
Andrew Young added 11 points all of them coming in the second half and Coleton Baker chipped in 10 for the Oakers (7-0), whose final margin of victory was the teams biggest lead of the game. Sutherlin (5-5) stayed within striking distance until the final minutes, when Oakland pulled away on free throws.
Weve been over this before, Sutherlin coach Tony Martineau said. Theyre the No. 1-ranked 2A team. Weve also played the No. 1-ranked 4A team (Henley) and Crater, which is a ranked 5A team. Weve played them all tough, and its come down to the last two minutes of every game. Were still trying to figure out how to execute in those last two minutes.
Spencer Hutchings led the Bulldogs with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including a 5-for-8 outing at the free throw line. Caleb Trowbridge and Joey Atterbury each scored nine points for Sutherlin, which finished 20-for-52 shooting (38.5 percent) from the field.
In order to stop Bradley Seehawers long-range ability, we had to contain the penetration of Caleb and Joey Atterbury, Oakland coach Jeff Clark said. We did a great job on that, and we had a bunch of guys who all played a part in doing that.
Sutherlin pulled within 43-39 with 6:59 left in the fourth quarter on a putback from Ott and foul shots from Trowbridge and Hutchings. But Taylor Kanen answered with a driving layup and hit a pair of foul shots with 4:40 remaining to put the Oakers up 51-43.
The Bulldogs again closed within four points at 55-51 on a putback from Trowbridge and a jumper from Ott. But Dickson answered with a fast-break layup in transition and Oakland turned a Sutherlin turnover into a pair of foul shots from Coleton Baker and a free throw from Young for a 59-51 lead with 24.3 seconds remaining.
Dallas Reids layup at the end of the first quarter brought Sutherlin within 16-14, and a Seehawer 3-pointer and a fast-break layup from Hutchings tied the game at 20-all. But after a putback from Atterbury brought the Bulldogs within a basket near the end of the stanza, Solomon Sturgills putback at the buzzer put the Oakers up 26-22 at the break.
Sutherlin continues non-league play at Bandon tonight. Oakland plays a much anticipated game against Class 2As second-ranked team, Western Mennonite, at 7:30 tonight.
