North Douglas girls rally past Yoncalla for tourney crown

DRAIN -- The North Douglas High girls basketball team came back to win its own tournament Friday, defeating North County rival, Yoncalla, 38-30.

The Warriors (7-0) remained undefeated after trailing by 10 at halftime. North Douglas trailed the Eagles 22-12 at halftime, but rallied with 26 points over the final 16 minutes of play.

Rochelle Hescock scored 14 points and Stephanie Hescock 12 to lead the Warriors, who held Yoncalla to two points in the third quarter.

"We made some adjustments at halftime and Yoncalla got into some foul trouble, so it was a combination of things that went our way," North Douglas coach Jeff Davis said.

Heather McDonald scored a game-high 15 points and Mariah Wilson grabbed 11 rebounds for the Eagles (2-5).

Myrtle Point 46

Douglas 35</b>

WINSTON -- Krissy Johnston scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the third quarter as 3A Myrtle Point rallied past 4A Douglas in a non-league game.

The Trojans (4-5) were up 24-21 at halftime and looking for revenge for a 22-point loss at Myrtle Point on Dec. 4, but the Bobcats (9-0) went on a 13-5 run in the third quarter.

"We had a bit of a letdown in the third quarter and Johnston took the game over from us," Douglas coach Jason Dickover said.

Katy King scored 12 points to lead Douglas, and Stacia Blankenship had 11 points and eight rebounds.

BLUE RIVER -- McKenzie held off visiting Umpqua Valley Christian in the fourth quarter for a non-league win.

Jenise Jones led the Eagles with 14 points, Katy Renee added 10 and Brittney Anderson grabbed eight rebounds.

"It was a real fast-paced game," UVC coach Mike Zerbach said. "They got ahead in the third and we made a run on them in the fourth but couldn't pull it all together."

Jorden Zerbach and Sara Harding each scored 14 points to lead the Monarchs (3-6).

WINSTON -- James Brown scored 19 points and Garren Hitner had 17 as Myrtle Point picked up a non-league win on the road. The Class 3A Bobcats led 21-8 after one quarter and went into halftime up 45-22.

Tyler Clark led Douglas with 15 points, Cody Walton had 13 and Sky Woods added 12. The Trojans were shorthanded without leading scorer Jason Tingle.

Douglas returns from the holiday break on Friday in the Cottage Grove Tournament against the host Lions at 5:30 p.m.

BLUE RIVER -- Top-ranked McKenzie lived up to its billing, nearly doubling the output of visiting Umpqua Valley Christian.

Jordan Fleming scored a game-high 16 points for the Eagles, Casey King had 13 and Weston Helfrick added 10.

"They are legitimate," UVC coach Joe Fusco said. "They were very good defensively and we sturggled with their pressure."

Ryan Graf led the Monarchs (6-3) with eight points.
