FRIDAY BASKETBALL: Oakers' defense stands tall vs. Pioneers



OAKLAND -- Defensive intensity set the tone for top-ranked Oakland early on against No. 4 Western Mennonite, and the Oakers built just enough of a first-half cushion to hold on at the end for a 47-44 non-league win at The Nut House.

Joey Lee had 12 points and Coleton Baker chipped in 10 for the Oakers (8-0), which held a 30-15 halftime advantage. But the Pioneers stormed back and pulled within four with close to a minute remaining.

Nate Adams hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 47-42 Oakland lead, and a putback from Daniel Martin cut Oakland's lead to three. Two missed Oakland foul shots followed, but a Western Mennonite 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed to end the game.

Martin finished with 21 points and Geoff Martin added 11 for the Pioneers (6-4), who shot just 37.2 percent (16 for 43) and have lost three of their last four games.

Lee, Dakota Mathis and Matt Dickson each finished with six rebounds for Oakland, which plays next against Umpqua Valley Christian at 8 p.m. Friday to open the Oakland Booster Club Holiday Tournament.

MYRTLE POINT -- Junior point guard Andrew Nale scored a career-high 34 points and three other South Umpqua players recorded double figures in the Lancers' rout of the 3A Bobcats.

Nale hit four of the Lancers' 11 3-point field goals. Jacob Grady and Ryan Smedley had 13 points each and Chase Beberger grabbed 10 rebounds. South Umpqua goes into the holiday break with an 8-4 record.

"Andrew was basically on fire, his best game by far," S.U. coach Mike Ernest said. "He did it at both ends of the court and created a lot of turnovers."

James Brown scored 23 points for Myrtle Point and Garren Hitner had 10 points to go with nine rebounds. The Bobcats trailed by 29 after three quarters, but went on a 25-13 run in the fourth.

BANDON -- Max DeVillers scored 21 points and Connor Jackson added 13 for 3A Bandon in its non-league victory over the 4A Bulldogs.

Joey Atterbury scored 18 points, Caleb Trowbridge nine and Aric Ott eight for the Bulldogs (5-6), who have lost five straight. The Bulldogs pulled to within three of the Tigers before Bandon outscored Sutherlin 18-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Sutherlin is off until Jan. 4, when it continues non-league play at Pleasant Hill.

MEDFORD -- The Wolves took a 16-point halftime lead, then held on to beat the St. Mary's junior varsity in a semifinal game of the A.G. Edwards Christmas Classic.

Bryar Zimmerman led Days Creek with eight points, while Tyler Hays and Joe Freeman each had seven. The Wolves took a 22-6 halftime lead and led 16-2 after the first eight minutes.

Alex Street and Connor O'Boyle each had five points to lead St. Mary's.

REEDSPORT -- The Panthers blitzed the Braves by outscoring them 25-9 in the second quarter and rolled to the Sunset League win.

Brett Martin led Gold Beach with 16 points, McKenzie Burdett had 14 and Todd Martin 12. Ish Osorio had 11 points and Cody Savey for the Braves (6-4, 1-1 Sunset).

"We got in foul trouble in the first half and that hurt us, and we couldn't make a shot," said Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh. "Nothing went right for us."

The Braves will face Yoncalla in the first round of the Dunes Classic at 7:30 p.m. thos coming Friday.

REEDSPORT -- Kourtney Moore scored a game-high 17 points to lead three Gold Beach players in double figures for the Panthers in their Sunset League victory over the Braves.

Hannah Smith had 10 points and Jessica Cooper chipped in eight for the Braves (4-6), whose defensive pressure created offensive opportunities that closed Reedsport's deficit to 25-19 at halftime. The Panthers, however, outscored the Braves 18-9 in the third quarter to pull away.

Kat Zuber added 13 and Meemie Yeiter 10 for Gold Beach.

Tailor Nunn chipped in six points for the Braves, who host Yoncalla at 6 p.m. Friday on the first day of the annual Reedsport Dunes Classic.

SUTHERLIN -- Kelsey George and Chelsea Passante combined to score 24 of the Pirates' 34 points, and Phoenix took advantage of a cold shooting performance by the Bulldogs down the stretch.

Tess Bennett scored a game-high 14 points for the Bulldogs, who got three good looks at the basket facing a two-point deficit and couldn't convert. Phoenix was held without a field goal in the fourth quarter after hitting six of their 11 total field goals in the first quarter.

Heather Weber added seven points for the Bulldogs (7-3 overall). Coach Josh Grotting complimented the defensive effort of Danielle Hults, who "came in and played shut-down defense."

Sutherlin is off until Dec. 27, when the Bulldogs play at the Baker City Invitational. Sutherlin plays Baker at 6 p.m. Dec. 27, McLoughlin at 4:45 p.m. Dec. 28 and La Grande at 4:45 p.m. Dec. 29.

EAGLE POINT -- Class 4A South Umpqua stayed right with Class 5A Eagle Point throughout the first half until a third-quarter halt in offensive production for the Lancers helped the Eagles pull away.

Taylor Hagy had 13 points to lead Eagle Point (3-7), which outscored South Umpqua 8-3 in the third quarter to take a 33-27 lead headed into the fourth quarter. The Lancers (5-6) rallied and had two chances to tie the contest with time winding down, but were unable to convert.

"We went cold," South Umpqua coach Andy Johnson said. "We had some good shots. We just weren't able to knock them down. That, and the free throws, made a difference."

Chelsea Duffy scored a game-high 15 points and Triana Crane added nine points for the Lancers, who host the South Umpqua Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lancers open the tournament with Taft at 1:45 p.m.

OAKLAND -- Oakland snapped a three-game losing streak with a convinving win before the holiday break.

Julie Basque led a balanced attack for Oakland (3-4) with 10 points and Molly Earls added eight. Nine Oakers scored and 12 saw playing time.

"We needed to get out of a little funk," Oakland coach Esther Moen said. "We were able to feed Julie the ball and she was going up real strong with it."

Rebeka Penrove led Western Mennonite with eight points.
