2A Warriors upset top-ranked 3A Cascade Christian



SALEM -- The North Douglas Warriors pulled away with strong first and fourth quarter performances to upset top-ranked 3A Cascade Christian, 65-54, in the fourth-place game of the Salem Academy Tournament Saturday.

All five starters scored in double-figures, led by Tyler Vancil's double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Cameron Derrick, Alex and Kyle Anderson, and Dustin Andes combined with Vancil for 63 of the Warriors' 65 points. Alex Anderson and Andes both had five assists.

"I could say something spectacular about any of my starting five," said N.D. coach Shane Mast.

Cascade Christian's Jeremy Cheney had a game-high 23 points, followed by Justin Duchien with 12.

North Douglas improves to 8-2 and will begin league play Jan. 3 as they host the Glendale Pirates.

COOS BAY -- Crook County emerged from a high-octane fourth quarter and beat Roseburg to capture the third-place trophy at the Les Schwab South Coast Classic.

Jordan Danforth scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Cowboys. James Nunez scored 11 and David Reeher added 10. All were named to the all-tournament team.

Zach Hancock led Roseburg (4-5) with 24 points. Hancock averaged 19.3 points per game in three games and was named to the all-tournament team. Jake Cavens scord 10 points and Brady Whitman added nine.

DAYS CREEK -- The Days Creek Wolves leapt to an early lead against Riddle Saturday, keeping the Irish down with strong defensive efforts in the first and third quarters.

Days Creek's Bryar Zimmerman had 22 to lead all scorers. Brodie Goldbeck had 20 for Riddle and also hit the only 3-point shot on the night.

OAKLAND -- Oakland increased its lead over Roseburg JV steadily throughout the night and the Oakers claimed the trophy for their own Booster Club Tournament.

Joey Lee led all scorers with 20 points, Andrew Young had a solid all-around game with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Tyler Fugate topped Oakland's rebounding with eight to go along with his six points.

Roseburg's Brad Strickland had 16 points and five rebounds for the Indians.

Jason Tingle capped off the Trojans' scoring and rebounding with 19 and seven, respectively. Sky Woods added 14.

Evan Muffen Bier scored 14 for the Gladiators.

ALBANY -- Katya Case scored 13 points to lead Enumclaw, Wash. to the consolation title game in the Pink Ribbon Tournament.

Katie Wilton led Roseburg (2-7) with 10 points. Beth Whitman and Wilton each grabbed five rebounds each. The Indians played without leading scorer Kendra Pennington due to illness.

"They did a much better job of executing their stuff than we did," Roseburg coach Jeff Thomas said. "They hurried us a bit and caused us to turn the ball over."

COTTAGE GROVE -- Douglas couldn't follow one upset of a top five team with another, falling to No. 2-ranked Gladstone in the Cottage Grove/Les Schwab Invitational title game.

Lisa Terry led the Gladiators' fast-break offense with 14 points. Katy King led the Trojans (6-7) with 16 points and Courtney Bush added 11. Douglas continues a tough preseason schedule next weekend at No. 9-ranked Marist.

REEDSPORT -- Tournament MVP Beth Stam finished with 31 points and Megan White added 13 to lead Toledo to a 68-53 victory over Reedsport in the Reedsport Dunes Classic tournament title game.

Hannah Smith finished with 18 points for the second consecutive night to earn all-tournament accolades and Chelsea Hitchcock chipped in 12 for the Braves (5-7 overall). Reedsport trailed 33-26 at halftime, but the Boomers kept the Braves at bay.

"They're a ranked ballclub and ... our girls played with a lot of heart," Reedsport coach Lynn Fulps said. "I'm definitely not unhappy about the way we played tonight."

Reedsport is off until Saturday when it continues Sunset League play at Bandon on Saturday.

Brittany Baimbridge led Oakland (5-5) with 11 points while Amber Dikkers and Taylor McLean each scored seven. Baimbridge and Alex Johnson each grabbed 10 rebounds and were named to the all-tournament team. Kayla Schiermeister scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Wildcats.

"This was the best we've played all year" said Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting. "La Grande was one of the better teams we've played all year."

Mariah Wilson had 11 points and nine boards for North Douglas, leader in both categories for the Warriors (8-2). Stephanie Hescock and Elyssa Emel added eight each.
