Members of the Eugene Opera perform a selection recently from Pirates of Penzance.
The opera is coming to town. Twelve members of the Eugene Opera will be performing Aug. 19 at MarshAnne Landing Winery outside of Oakland.
The opera singers will be performing five songs from Gilbert and Sullivans Pirates of Penzance, a piece from Puccinis Madama Butterfly, and five songs from Mozarts The Magic Flute, all in the first set.
The second set will include a number of arias and songs from popular Broadway shows.
There is a very strong following of people who want to come, said Greg Cramer, owner of MarshAnne Landing.
There is also a rumor that Lucia will be performed, bringing excitement to those who know it.
There were some people that I told about it and they said we were in tears when we saw Lucia in Eugene, several years ago, said Cramer.
He said that Carol and Terry Tollefson, of Tollys Restaurant will be there and have a table, and that this will be a great time to give them a farewell as they retire from the restaurant business.
Cramer also plans to highlight the many artists who have bronzes for sale at the winery.
There will be appetizers included in the $20 ticket price, and a view of the winery from the deck outside the tasting room.
This event is part of the Eugene Operas outreach program. Members of the chorus perform the lead roles, which they are the understudies for in case they are needed during the opera season.
They are the back-ups for the lead singers, who are of international quality, said Reggie Tonry, a performer who is also on the board of directors.
Tonry debuted in 1949, with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, according to Cramer.
The winery performance is a great chance for people in places like Oakland to have an opera come to them, he said.
It is also a chance for the opera to make a pitch for its upcoming season, and it is a chance to get out into the community.
The schools today have decimated their music programs, and one thing we really enjoy is going into schools and doing things like this, said Tonry.
He enjoys doing the outreach program and is open to requests for it to come to other places.
The operas season begins in November with Christiane Nolls The Art of The American Diva, continues in December with Mozart's The Magic Flute, and finishes with Puccini's Madama Butterfly.
The opera, in its 14th year this coming season, plays in the Hult Center in Eugene.
Seating at the winery is limited, but if there is enough interest, the opera will return in September.
They want to do this each year, Cramer said. I think this is going to be the beginning of a nice relationship.
