6.4 earthquake hits off Oregon coast, no damage reported

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A magnitude-6.4 earthquake was recorded 150 miles off the Oregon coast Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake struck at 5:37 p.m., the U.S. Geological Survey said. A tsunami is not expected, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

Police dispatchers in several coastal communities said they had yet to receive any calls from people who felt the quake. The U.S. Coast Guard also reported no quake-related problems.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit off the Oregon coast at 5:37 p.m. Wednesday.

The epicenter was about 150 miles west of Winchester Bay, at an estimated depth of about 6 miles.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has stated that they do not expect a tsunami as a result of the quake. The statement was posted as follows.

<i>"At 5:37 PM Pacific Standard Time on January 9, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.4 occurred off the coast of Oregon.

The magnitude is such that a tsunami IS NOT EXPECTED. However, in coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunamis can be triggered by underwater landslides. This will be the only WCATWC message issued for this event.
