Morning low ties record temperature

The temperature in Roseburg this morning dropped to 21 degrees, tying a record low set in 1969.

For the second straight night, clear skies over the Umpqua Valley allowed the daytime heat that had built up to escape. As a result, the temperature, which had reached 43 degrees during the afternoon, plummeted overnight.

The National Weather Service reported freezing fog in the Roseburg area around sunrise. That could make driving conditions hazardous on some roads.

Douglas Crince, the program director at the Roseburg Rescue Mission, said that the number of homeless men seeking shelter rises and falls with the temperatures.

“We also see an increase in the blankets that we distribute,” Crince said. “We give them to anyone who is in need.”

The mission has beds for 52 people. Not only were all of those beds taken last night, Crince said they laid out six mats on the floor for people to sleep on.

The head count is up from only 41 men on the first of the year, when the low temperature was 31 degrees.

Like Monday night, the low temperature wasn’t recorded until late in the overnight cycle last night. After hovering at 22 degrees for two hours, the temperature at the Roseburg Regional Airport dropped another degree between 5 and 6 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

At the Harvard Avenue studios of radio station KQEN, the low temperature this morning was 20 degrees, program director Kyle Bailey said.

The National Weather Service revised its low temperature for Roseburg on Tuesday to 21 degrees. It was originally reported at 22 degrees, eclipsing the previous record of 26 degrees set in 1979.

To the east in the Cascade Mountains, Diamond Lake Resort reported this morning that its overnight low temperature was 12 degrees.

Today’s forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the low to middle 40s. Tonight, it will be mostly clear, with lows in the mid-20s to lower 30s.

Clouds are expected to move in Thursday morning, bringing a slight chance of rain or snow. Rain is likely in the afternoon, with snow at elevations 3,000 feet or higher. Thursday night temperatures are predicted to remain in the low 30s or colder, with the chance of precipitation 80 percent.
