Award-winning 4-H leader still serves

Did you know that Douglas County has an award winning 4-H Leader?

Well, we do! Marian Stratton of Riddle was named Oregon 4-H Leader of the Year by the state 4-H Leaders Association committee. She definitely deserves this honor, and she continues to contribute her volunteer services for the 4-H youth program.

Marian is a 4-H leader in foods, clothing, photography and table setting. She has been a coordinator for at least four major annual 4-H events, she serves on four county committees, two state committees, serves as superintendent of two areas at the Douglas County Fair, is an adult chaperone for the 4-H Interstate Exchange program, helps at our local resident 4-H camp, and teaches at various classes, clinics and workshops in the county, state and region. She is a very dedicated 4-H volunteer who works hard to make sure youth in Douglas County are getting educational opportunities outside of the classroom.

On a recent Monday, Marian planned an adventurous “no school” day activity for 4-H students to attend. They traveled to Portland to visit Pendleton Woolen Mills.

Shelby Filley, our livestock & forages agent, informed me that Douglas County produces more than 200,000 pounds of wool annually. Did you know that some of the wool ends up at the Pendleton mills for fabric production? That’s an example of some of the interesting information that the 4-H members, leaders and parents attending making the trip learned, thanks to Marian.

Marian is also taking on the leadership role of organizing and developing a new project area for 4-H students to enter at the Douglas County Fair. She had a class for 4-H members interested in learning about home decorating. This encompasses many elements, such as color combinations, fabric selection, placement of furniture, floor plans, space, lighting and much more.

Students worked on developing a display board of what they’ve learned to enter for judging at the fair. She has spent a great deal of time developing this project at the state level, and has brought back the knowledge to share with interested youth. Marian sees the value in volunteering for a program like 4-H. She has knowledge and is willing to share it for the benefit of others.

As a volunteer-based program, 4-H continues to function with leaders like Marian. She serves as an inspiration in citizenship and leadership for many people in the community. Marian has worked hard to instill these traits in young people and adults, so that Douglas County residents mature with the wisdom she has brought to all who work with her.
