Grape Expectations is the theme for the 2008 Greatest of the Grape, scheduled for March 15 at the Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort in Canyonville.
The Umpqua Valley Winegrowers Associations event will be from 7 to 11 p.m. The 38-year-old gathering is Oregons oldest wine celebration.
Tickets are $75 and theres a limit of 600. Tickets for past events have sold out. Tables for 10 can be reserved in advance, a new feature this year.
I can remember back to the days wed barely fill up one small room, said Scott Henry of Henry Estate Winery of Umpqua. Hes been part of the event since its first year. Now we can barely get everybody into Seven Feathers and if we had more room, wed have more people.
This is a nice experience for people who want to try wine, to try wine-and-food combinations, and see what they like, he added.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.umpquavalleywineries.org or by visiting or calling Abacela Winery, 12500 Lookingglass Rd., Roseburg, 541-679-6642; Henry Estate, 684 Hubbard Creek Rd, Umpqua, 541-459-5120; or Melrose Vineyards, 885 Melqua Rd., Roseburg, 541-672-6080.
This year the event will feature vintages from 28 wineries, with half being from the Umpqua region and the other half from the rest of Oregon. The wines will be paired with culinary creations from 14 Oregon restaurants. A random drawing matches two wineries with one restaurant; the trio then works together in advance to create award-winning wine-food pairings.
The Umpqua Valley is one of the fastest growing wine regions in the Northwest, said Syndi Beavers of Henry Estate. Beavers is also president of the UVWA. Were no longer a well-kept secret and Greatest of the Grape is where we show off our best single varietals and top blends.
Umpqua Valley wineries participating in the 2008 event include Abacela, Anindor, Bradley, Brandborg, Girardet, Henry Estate, MarshAnne Landing, Melrose, Misty Oaks, Palotai, Rivers Edge, Sienna Ridge, Spangler and Wild Rose. The new tasting rooms of Julianna and Becker will also participate.
Greatest of the Grape brings together serious wine aficionados and regular folks for one incredible evening, said Jannelle Wilde, the UVWA executive secretary and the event coordinator.
Wines entered in Greatest of the Grape will be judged prior to the gathering by a professional tasting panel; honors will be announced that evening. The Peoples Choice Awards for wine and wine-food pairings will be decided and announced at the event.
