Fair Time is FUN Time! Look over there, a pig, and over there a steer and then there’s all of the clothing and baking …” “Wait! Didn’t I just hear about another great kid’s program offered by the Douglas County OSU Extension Service?”

4-H is often thought of in only one way: Youth get involved in a 4-H club, raise a market or breeding animal and exhibit at the county fair. However, the Douglas County OSU Extension Service offers a wide range of 4-H programs. Since 2003, the Extension Service has offered the 4-H Youth Forestry Education Program. The program provides forestry and natural resource activities for all Douglas County youth grades 3 through 8, available both after school and on non-school days.

The program has been providing natural resource education through elementary schools and other community sites for the past five years. It’s offered in Roseburg, Glide, Oakland, Sutherlin, Myrtle Creek and Tri City.

Rose Elementary School is the current partner in the eight-week 4-H Forestry Wildlife After-School Program. This is a series of classes with interactive education designed to teach youth about tree growth, types of trees, what products come from trees, animal habitat, animal track identification, animal classification and other wildlife topics.

Every session includes crafts and hands-on learning activities. The kids are always excited about our “hyped-up visitor from the forest.” The program’s objective is to enhance understanding of natural resource issues and forest management activities. Students have shown us that they can have fun and learn at the same time.

The 4-H Youth Forestry Education Program also offers activities on no-school days. Children learn about different natural resource topics through games, crafts, guest speakers and group activities. Our next Forestry Fun Day is scheduled for President’s Day (Feb. 18).

OSU forestry instructor Raini Rippy will introduce kids to the fun and fabulous world of fungi. Each student will go home with a tree seedling. Other activities will include kid-friendly crafts and exploration of forestry and wildlife through games.

This event, which is geared for 3rd- through 5th-graders, will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Extension Service Church Annex, 1134 S.E. Douglas Ave., Roseburg. Admission is $5.

For more information, contact our office at the number below. Registration will be accepted until Tuesday. Students do not need to be enrolled in the 4-H program to attend.

During spring break, we’ve planned an educational trip to the Science Factory Museum in Eugene on March 25. Registration details will be available at the Extension Service Web site as the date approaches.

Activities this summer include 4-H Forestry day camps and day trips for students completing grades 3 through 8. Again, these programs are open to all Douglas County youth.

In 2007, the 4-H Youth Forestry Program reached 250 youth and made contact with 506 youth with our 4-H natural resource programming. We will continue to reach out to different communities in Douglas County to increase forestry and wildlife education opportunities.

For more information about this program, or to register for an event, contact the Douglas County OSU Extension Service at 672-4461 or contact Jodi Smith, 4-H Youth Forestry instructor, at 672-4461. Visit the Extension Service Web site at extension.oregonstate.edu/douglas/.
