COOS BAY The third-ranked Umpqua Community College womens basketball team dominated the inside en route to a 99-77 victory over Southwestern Oregon in the regular season finale.
Deanna Tupai scored 31 points, Marissa Towry had 24 points and Roseburg High graduate Kristi Fallin added 15 for Umpqua (25-4, 11-3 Southern Region). UCC outrebounded the Lakers 55-35. The Hawks shot 52.9 percent from the field, compared to Southwestern Oregons 29.6 percent.
We are known for jamming the ball inside and it forces defenses to make a decision, Umpqua coach Dave Stricklin said. (The Lakers) are undersized and play hard and are scrappy, but they cant match up with us inside.
UCC gave up 11 3-point field goals, including five apiece to Brianna Wallace and Rachael Matthews. Wallace had a game-high 32 points.
I dont want to take anything away from (Wallace), but as good as a win it was for us, we are disappointed with our defense, Stricklin said. Its the time of year going into the playoffs where we need to identify and locate the leading scorer and then you have to shut her down.
Umpquas opponent in the opening round of the NWAACC Tournament will be either Lower Columbia or South Puget Sound at 10 p.m. Feb. 28 in Kennewick, Wash.
