Grizzlies spoil Indians’ debut, 1-0

McMINNVILLE — Roseburg High’s softball team dropped its season opener Wednesday, as McMinnville scored the winning run on an error with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 1-0 victory.

The non-league contest turned into a pitcher’s duel between senior Mikayla Endicott of Roseburg and junior Anna Bertrand of McMinnville — both first-team all-state selections in 2007.

Endicott allowed three hits, striking out 16 and walking one. Bertrand gave up two hits, with nine strikeouts and three walks.

In the eighth, the Grizzlies’ Jordan Williams led off with a single and stole second. Endicott retired the next two batters on strikeouts, then Williams attempted to steal third. The throw skipped off the glove of Roseburg shortstop Crysta Conn and Williams came home with the only run of the game.

Roseburg’s only hits were a fifth inning double by Kendra George and a sixth inning single by Alyssa Desbiens. The Indians loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth, but couldn’t score as a failed squeeze play and two strikeouts ended the rally.

“We have to take advantage of our opportunities,” said Roseburg coach Tony Campos. “We have to put the ball in play. The conditions weren’t the greatest ... it rained the whole game, but we played pretty well. They just got a break and we didn’t.

“Mac (Endicott) pitched a very good game. McMinnville is a good team and facing better teams will help us. This will give us a wakeup call to work harder.”

The Indians will be in Springfield Friday to play Thurston in a non-league game.
