The Oregon State University Extension Services 4-H programs are hard at work during the non-school hours.
On March 25 during spring break, the 4-H Forestry Education Program will be taking an exciting road trip to the Science Factory Museum in Eugene. The trip is open to any student in third to fifth grade and participants do not need to be enrolled in the 4-H program to attend.
So, if your children need a fun day trip during the week long spring break, send them with us. It is a great chance for your kids to make new friends and explore a terrific science museum. The cost for this trip is $15, which includes admission to the museum and lunch. For more details, please contact the OSU Extension Service Office directly at 672-4461.
Registrations will be accepted in the Extension Office until March 18. Registration details are also available online at extension.oregonstate.edu/douglas/.
The trip to the Science Factory Museum is one example of the many activities offered by the OSU Extension Services 4-H Program. The program provides many opportunities for youth to explore forestry and natural science through no-school day events, workshops, after school programs, 4-H clubs and youth leadership opportunities. Although participants dont have to be enrolled in a 4-H club to participate in Forestry Education Program events, many of them go on to be exceptional 4-H club members.
Kayla Gordon, who has been in 4-H for seven years, became involved through a Natural Science Club. She is now actively involved in the areas of forestry, natural science, photography and Dog 4-H.
Kayla received several honors this past year in awards and ribbons. Among her accomplishments, she was a grand champion in forestry and grand champion in intermediate photography. At the state fair, she earned a blue ribbon in forestry and champion in intermediate photography.

At the fall Recognition Festival, Kayla received a county medal in forestry, overall grand champion for her 4-H record book and the great honor of the Outstanding 4Her Award. She is well deserving of the Outstanding 4Her award; she is dedicated and works hard to achieve her goals.
When I asked Kayla what she likes about 4-H, she said, I love learning about my project areas, expanding in leadership and becoming more involved in the community. A few years ago I realized that the real purpose of 4-H is for youth to learn about themselves and to grow as a person. Yourself is your biggest project, and the one you can make the most difference with. I am learning more about who I am than anything else.

Kayla has found that 4-H has helped her choose her career path and build her leadership skills. She loves photography and credits the 4-H program for introducing her to it. She is a Junior 4-H Leader and assists in teaching the Forestry Club.
There are many students in 4-H achieving great things, and Kayla is one of them. 4-H can provide the foundation and the tools for youth to grow and learn.
