S.U. takes two from Rogue River



ROGUE RIVER — South Umpqua right-hander Taylor Whitmore pitched a pair of complete games in 2-1 and 11-1 wins over Rogue River on Saturday, firing a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the opener and allowing only one hit in the nightcap.

The Lancers (4-0) pushed over two runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally for the win. Katie Bumgarner singled and scored on a double by Whitmore, then Whitmore came home in a single by Melodie Bliven.

Bumgarner went 2-for-4 in the contest.

In Game two, the S.U. broke it open with a six-run third. Triana Crane went 3-for-5 with a home run, Bumgarner 2-for-3 and Whitmore 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Lancers are scheduled to host Newport in a non-league doubleheader Wednesday, beginning at noon.

Riddle 1-3

Scio 3-0

RIDDLE — The Irish split with Scio in a non-league doubleheader.

Scio’s Ashley Guenther tossed a three-hit shutout in Game 1, striking out 16.

Asia Ramsey, who went 2-for-3, hit a double in the sixth inning for the Irish, which set up an RBI single by Ashley Yackamouih.

Pitcher Stephanie Maurer, who registered three strikeouts and two walks, allowed one earned run and took the loss.

Riddle pitcher Stevie Hooley struck out three batters, walked none and allowed five hits in the Irish victory.

Taylor Riekeman drove in two scores off a triple in the second inning to provide Riddle a 2-0 lead, which they would not relinquish.

Riddle (4-1) plays at Days Creek at 4:30 p.m. April 1.

BASEBALL

Oakland wins a pair

MODESTO, Calif. — Oakland is California cruisin’ so far.

The Oakers scored 14 runs in the first two innings of a game against Gustine to win easily, 20-1.

Ethan Sweeden went 4-for-4, belting a home run in the fourth inning and recording four scored runs and six RBIs.

Winning pitcher Kyle Perry threw a complete game, striking out eight, walking one and giving up two hits. Perry was 2-for-2 and scored four runs at the plate. Dakota Mathis finished 3-for-4 and scored three runs.

In LeGrand Grand, Calif., Sweeden swung for two triples and a double and the Oakers jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first inning to win 14-7.

Mathis, who struck out six, walked three and gave up four hits, earned the victory. Jake McClinton went 3-for-5, Sweeden 3-for-4 and Trevvor Simmons 2-for-4 with a triple and double.

Oakland (3-1) plays a double-header Thursday in Las Vegas.

MEDFORD — Experienced pitching led the way for St. Mary’s in a sweep of visiting North Douglas.

Paul Hume pitched a no-hitter in the first game, striking out 10 and walking two.

Tyson Tinnes went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs, Tanner Toy went 2-for-2, scoring once, and Jake Rice hit a two-run single.

The Warriors (0-2) travel to Bandon Tuesday.

Glendale 6-3

Lowell 5-0

LOWELL — Glendale improved to 4-1 on the season with a non-league sweep.

Glendale rallied off a key hit by Josh Mozingo at the top of the seventh to score six runs and pull out the win over the Red Devils, who had owned a 5-0 lead. Mozingo also scored the winning run.

Dylan Boucher led Glendale to a 3-0 win in the second game, striking out 15.

Glendale hosts a doubleheader against Oakridge Tuesday.

JUNCTION CITY — South Umpqua failed to score a run against Junction City, a team bolstered by strong pitching and power hitting.

Tiger Cody Garner smashed a home run in the first inning and Nick Phielman belted another over the fence in the fourth, fueling Junction City’s sweep of the Lancers.

Garner, a tall left-hander with a potent fastball, fanned 10 while only giving up two hits.

South Umpqua’s Ryan Smedley surrendered seven runs (three earned) before Josh Kennedy replaced him in the fourth inning.

Mike Clack and Austin Marsh recorded the Lancers’ only hits.

Junction City’s Grady Wood notched 10 strikeouts in the nightcap, helping give the Tigers their second blowout win of the day.

South Umpqua (1-3) travels to Eagle Point Tuesday.

WINSTON — Douglas picked up a win behind a Grand Slam in Game 1, then was shut out in the nightcap.

Bryson Norton crushed a bases-loaded home run in the fifth inning and earned the pitching win for the Trojans.

Sophomore Paul Polamalu relieved Norton in the fifth and gave up just one hit through three innings.

Trailing 6-1 in the fourth inning, Douglas rattled off eight runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Nic Syrie was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, Cody Walton went 2-for-3, Nick Bohnenkamp finished 2-for-3 and Polamalu 2-for-4.

Douglas (3-1) hosts Yamhill-Carlton at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
