Ammonia leak shuts down rest area

MYRTLE CREEK — Officials evacuated and shut down the South Umpqua River rest area off Interstate 5 for more than six hours Monday after a tanker trailer leaked hazardous materials.

Police began receiving numerous reports around 10 a.m. that there was a “very potent odor” coming from a tanker trailer parked at the southbound rest area near Milepost 112, according to an Oregon State Police report.

The trailer contained anhydrous ammonia transported by Hill Brothers Chemical, based in Peoria, Ariz., according to the report.

Emergency personnel from the Roseburg Fire Department, Myrtle Creek Fire Department and Hazardous Material Incident Command Response went to the rest area and confirmed a small amount of material was leaking from a valve on the trailer.

State police and Oregon Department of Transportation officials helped evacuate six vehicles, then closed the rest area. No one there needed medical attention, according to the report.

First Strike Environmental personnel responded to help with the cleanup. The trailer was inspected and the driver repaired the valve, according to the report.

The rest area was re-opened at 4:30 p.m.
