No deficit too big for Glide on the road



Le Grand, Calif. — After traveling for about 20 hours in crammed trucks, Glide shook out its legs and swept Le Grand in a doubleheader, 13-12 and 3-2.

The Wildcats came back from 4-0 and 9-7 deficits in Game 1, scoring three times in the top of the seventh to squeak by. Glide never trailed in the nightcap.

Jeff Jackson had eight strikeouts in game 1 and Kyle Fields fanned seven and didn’t walk any in the nightcap.

Brandon Belloir was 2-for-4 with a triple, double and 3 RBIs in game 1 and Brock Halter went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Josh Huskey finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. In the fifth inning of game 1, Glide was resilient, recording seven runs with two outs.

The Wildcats played Gustine (Calif.) at 1 p.m. today.

<b>Douglas 15-11

Myrtle Point 3-1</b>

WINSTON — After some recently poor weather, Douglas came swinging, combined 20 hits in a doubleheader sweep.

Cody Walton went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles in Game 1 and Devon Quimby went 2-for-2 with double and two RBI. Nic Syrie also hit 2-for-2.

“We put the ball in play really well,” Douglas coach Ryan Hunter said. “It was a really good effort considering how bad the weather has been lately and not being able to play. We went out and did what we wanted to do.”

Douglas’ hot swinging carried over to the nightcap, ignited by a solo home run by Bryson Norton in the first inning. Tim Bellando went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI and Dom Rocco went 2-for-2 for the Trojans (5-1).

Rogue River 0-2</b>

ROGUE RIVER — Bo Younker pitched a five-hit shutout but South Umpqua was unable to complete the road sweep in Game 2.

Blake Cupp went 5-for-8 with five RBI on the day, including a 3-run home run in the opener. Chris Murphy finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Up 1-0 in the seventh inning of Game 2, the Lancers gave up a passed ball that tied the game and a Rogue River sacrifice fly brought in the winning run.

“When you let a home team stay close and they don’t score for 13 innings and you are up by only one run, you are destined to have some problems,” S.U. coach Ryan Savage said.

The Lancers (2-5) host Hidden Valley Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

UVC 6</b>

MONROE — Umpqua Valley Christian had trouble putting the bat on the ball in a non-league road loss.

The Dragons, meanwhile, didn’t have any, getting eight runs off 10 hits, almost all singles.

Jacob Lum scored two runs and Ryan Graf drove in three while collecting four of UVC’s five hits on the day.

“We didn’t play our best ball,” UVC coach David York said. “We didn’t play with much intensity or competitive edge. And we didn’t hit the ball.”
