Flowers and crosses Saturday mark the scene of a double fatal car crash along Old Melrose Road in Roseburg. Two teens were killed at the scene late Friday night.
Two Roseburg teens are dead after the vehicle they were riding in left the road, hit an electrical pole, crashed into a tree and flipped upside down. The 15-year-old driver is in serious condition and another teen-aged passenger was treated and released after the accident.
The crash occurred at 11:58 p.m. Friday on Old Melrose Road, near the Roseburg city sewer plant. The four teens were in a 1995 Toyota Camry, driven by 15-year-old Jacob Gonzales, of Roseburg, Roseburg Police Department Cpl. Robert Carpenter said.
Gonzales failed to negotiate a corner and the vehicle left the road near Goedeck Avenue. The drivers side of the vehicle swiped an electrical pole and then spun around and hit a fir tree, Carpenter said. The vehicle knocked the tree down and the car flipped upside down, he said.
Rachel Merrell, 17, and Anthony Nickels, 15, both of Roseburg, were pronounced dead on the scene, Carpenter said. Gonzales was flown to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center, and was listed in serious condition Saturday afternoon. Sarah Sitton, 16, of Sutherlin, was taken to Mercy Medical Center where she was treated and released.
The electrical pole damage caused homes in the area to lose power until crews were able to replace the pole.
