Owens throws another perfect game

Glendale sweeps past Lost River 10-4, 10-0 as Owens strikes out 11

GLENDALE — Senior left-hander Gretchen Owens threw a perfect game in the nightcap of a 10-4, 10-0 sweep against Lost River Saturday.

Owens, the reigning Mountain View Conference player of the year, faced 15 batters and struck out 11 in the nightcap. She has yet to be scored on this year.

Owens also went 5-for-8 on the day at the plate with a double.

“Gretchen just cruised,” Glendale coach Andy Owens said. “She dominated.”

The Pirates, who hadn’t played a game for over a week due to rainy weather, outhit Lost River 13-4 and manufactured seven runs off six hits in the third inning in game 1.

Rori Lovemark earned five strikeouts, but walked seven batters in her first outing of the year. Zoe Brown finished 3-for-4. Lovemark was 2-for-2 with a triple in game 2.

The Pirates (4-0) host Oakland at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Cottage Grove 2</b>

COTTAGE GROVE — Douglas had a day of threes in a non-league romp over Cottage Grove. Anna Pleich went 3-for-3 at the plate, scored three times and stole three bases while Courtney Bush, Jessica Case and Amanda Harris all hit triples.

Katy King struck out 14 batters in a complete game win, allowing only a first inning run to the Lions. Douglas scored six times in the second and added three more in the third.

“The conditions were difficult for both teams, but I feel we did a good job of refocusing each time they started to get something going,” Douglas coach Rick Taylor said.

<b>Eagle Point 3

South Umpqua 2</b>

EAGLE POINT — South Umpqua lost a heartbreaker, letting the winning run go by in extra innings after blowing a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh.

Class 5A Eagle Point took advantage of a pair of errors in the seventh to tie the game, then had a baserunner sneak home in the ninth.

Taylor Whitmore pitched a complete game, earning five strikeouts and giving up five hits and two walks to pick up her first loss of the year. Katie Bumgarner was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

South Umpqua (4-1) travels to play Hidden Valley at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
