Have you ever wondered whom you should call or visit when you want the answer as to why your vegetable garden is having problems, or why your trees are dying, or how to manage insect problems in your yard or home while minimizing pesticide use, or how to lower your water bill and still have a beautiful landscape?

There is only one place in Douglas County that provides that service, and that is the OSU Master Gardener Plant Clinic.

The Master Gardener Plant Clinic is without a doubt the best location for whatever plant- or pest-related question you may have, and the clinic is also a great value for the people of Douglas County. The plant clinic is located at the OSU Extension Office in the Church Annex, next to the county courthouse. We also have plant clinic tables set up to answer questions on Saturdays at the weekly farmers market, and at Kruse Farm market.

The plant clinic is run by Master Gardener volunteers who have graduated from an 11-week training program given by me, the OSU Extension horticulture agent, other OSU faculty, and veteran Master Gardeners. Our volunteers will give a minimum of 60 hours a year to our educational activities, such as the plant clinic, as a thank you for our intensive training

At the plant clinic, two new graduates are teamed up with two veteran Master Gardeners who have already worked in the clinic for at least one year. Many of the veterans have been volunteering in the plant clinic for five years or more.

Having new and veteran Master Gardeners working together keeps our experience level high so our service to the public is consistently good. During the past few years our volunteers have helped between 1,600 and 1,850 clients per year seeking advice. Our volunteers are also asked to speak with garden clubs and other community groups to share their gardening knowledge. During these outreach activities, our volunteers have spoken to an average of 1,900 people per year in the community during the past few years.

To provide this valuable service, our Master Gardeners volunteered more than 15,000 hours in 2007 to the people of Douglas County. These volunteered hours are the equivalent of 7.5 full-time employees at no cost to our county. When county budgets are tight, this is the kind of service that adds great value to our community.

We invite you to use our plant clinic services, whether they are plant-related, pest-related, or a simple soil test for your yard. During the main gardening season, April to September, our volunteers keep the plant clinic open 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In October and March the clinic is open 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In November and February the clinic is open 1 to 4 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. And in December and January the clinic is open only on Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m.
