YONCALLA — “They took it to us in the first game and woke us up,” said North Douglas High softball coach Brad Borigo, referring to a 4-0 loss to Yoncalla.

The Warriors came back for a 9-1 win in the nightcap, salvaging a split with the Eagles in a Mountain View Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

“There’s a rivalry and to walk away with a split is almost a win because of the history,” Borigo said. “Our girls finally decided to swing the bats (in the second game) and I think they learned a lesson from Yoncalla.”

Amber Mast threw a three-hit shutout for Yoncalla (2-6, 1-5 MVC) in the opener, striking out two and walking one. Mast helped herself out by going 2-for-3 with a triple and double.

Ashleigh Meza was the losing pitcher, giving up four hits. She struck out six and walked one.

“She (Mast) had good control and didn’t get in much trouble,” Borigo said.

The Warriors (3-4, 3-1 MVC) took the lead for good in the second game with five runs in the top of the fourth, stroking four doubles. Meza went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, allowing five hits. She struck out four and walked three.

Meza went 3-for-4, while Kaittlyn Rice and Mariah Wilson each were 2-for-4. Rice had a pair of doubles.

North Douglas will play a makeup game at Crow Thursday. Yoncalla hosts Oakland Tuesday.
