Shawn Anthony Oliveira

Roseburg, Oregon, resident Shawn Anthony Oliveira, age 37, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2008 after a long bout with cancer. Shawn was born in Sacramento, California. As an infant and toddler he lived in Colorado and California. At age 3, he and his parents moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Shawn learned to ice skate and to enjoy camping and canoeing. In 1976, they moved to Corvallis, Oregon, where his sister, Marsi, soon joined the family. Shawn attended Corvallis public schools and graduated from Crescent Valley High School in 1989. As a youth, Shawn greatly enjoyed music, role-playing games, scouting and drama. After high school, Shawn fulfilled a dream by starting his own rock band. He attended Linn-Benton Community College, where he was active in drama. In 1993 his sister invited him to a young adult Christian conference in Montana, and Shawn accepted Jesus into his life. He became a youth leader at the Kings Circle Assembly of God in Corvallis, where he met Cheryl Hagerman. Cheryl and Shawn were married in 1995. Shawn briefly worked as a computer lab administrator at Cheldelin Middle School. In 1999, he enlisted in the Air Force. He and his family were stationed in Okinawa, when Shawn developed severe chronic pain. He was eventually issued a medical retirement. This was a disappointment to Shawn as he loved the military and wanted to make it his career. He and his family moved to Roseburg, Oregon in 2001. He served as a docent at the Wildlife Safari and started taking on-line courses towards his bachelor’s degree. In spite of his debilitating pain, Shawn served as a Cub Scout leader in Glide, Oregon. He played a major role in the 2007 Douglas County Cub Scout Day Camp after going through chemotherapy and major operations earlier that year. During the past year Shawn and his family became active in the Glide Calvary Chapel, where he participated in the Worship Team. His passions were God and his family. He loved doing crafts and games with Cheryl and the kids. Witnessing to others about God’s love came easy to him. His knack for working with youth was inspiring. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; sons, Zack (12), Joe (ten) and Greg (two), daughter, Lydia (ten); parents, Ron and Marilyn Oliveira; sister, Marisela Hammersley; grandfather, Joseph E. Oliveira; parents-in-law, Barbara and Steve Hagerman; sister-in-law, Shawna Hagerman; brothers in-law, Scott Hagerman and Cory Hammersley; nephews, Wesley Hammersley and Trevor Bruce, and many loving friends who have greatly supported him and his family over these past few years. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the North Umpqua Bible Fellowship, 1547 Wild River Drive, Roseburg (about 3 miles west of Glide, off Highway 138). An informal meal will be provided following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Shawn Oliveira Children’s Trust Fund at Premier West Bank, PO Box 100, Glide, OR 97443.
