ROSEBURG

Class of ’53 gives scholarship

Katrina Lines has been selected as the 2008 recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Roseburg High School Class of 1953.

Lines moved to Roseburg for her final two years of high school and was selected for her hard work, dedication and curiosity, which made her a stellar student. She served as senior class president, had a 3.75 grade point average and won numerous school awards. She was also involved with community service and athletics.



OAKLAND

Ag teacher

wins award

Oakland High School teacher Kate Crawford has been selected for a Teachers Turn the Key Award from the National Association of Agricultural Educators.

The award will provide a travel stipend for Crawford to attend the association’s national convention in Charlotte, N.C. Winners take part in special programs during the convention designed to address the concerns of agricultural teachers who are early in their career.

Dodge sponsors the award as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.



RIDDLE

Student designs bridge pylon

Riddle Junior/Senior High School junior Lacee Martin has won $500 for her design for a decorative pylon for a new bridge over Cow Creek in Riddle.

The contest was held by Pinnacle Western Inc. and Douglas County, and it asked students to create designs that would reflect Riddle’s unique history and culture.

Eleven students submitted designs and a panel chose Martin’s, which features the Riddle crest and Cow Creek. They also chose Dory Bixby as a notable runner-up.

The county will place the pylons with Martin’s design on the four corners of the bridge on Main Street in the fall.

The Riddle bridge is the second in Douglas County to feature pylons designed by local students. A bridge in Elkton was the first.



ROSEBURG

Students win patriotic art event

Umpqua Valley Christian School junior Taylor Howard won first place and $100 in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2468’s Patriotic Art Contest.

Howard took second place at the state level in Pendleton.

Roseburg High School student Sean Donnelly took second at the post level, and Kristin Mitchell, also a Roseburg High student, took third.

Art students

win contests

Roseburg High School juniors Nicole Liu and Brian Bayliss placed first and second in the 2008 Douglas County Traffic Safety Contest. Liu won $100, and Bayliss won $75.

Roseburg High senior Chanelle Culler placed second in the 2008 Oregon Humane Society “Be Kind to Animals” poster contest. She won a sweatshirt and a T-shirt.



CORVALLIS

Roseburg student wins scholarship

Roseburg resident Ashley Ritchie has received the $500 E.L. Potter Scholarship. She is a senior in agricultural business management at Oregon State University.
