Despite efforts to trap a group of nuisance bears in recent weeks, a second bear was shot Monday in the Chinook Lane area, according to the Reedsport Police Department.
Officers responded to the area around 2 p.m. after receiving a report of a bear there. By the time Chief Shawn Essex arrived, a wildlife official had dispatched the bear, according to a press release.
Wildlife officials have been trying to trap the bears for the past two weeks, when the animals started showing up in neighborhoods and scaring the residents.
Police ended up shooting one bear on June 12. The bear shot Monday was located about 100 yards from a trap, according to the press release.
Residents are encouraged to remain cautious because there is still at least one bear in the area. Residents should not feed bears or leave their trash out at night before it is scheduled to be picked up.
Trash should be kept in garages or other enclosed areas. Residents should call the police department if they observe any bears, and should not approach the animals.
Attempts to trap any remaining bears will continue.
