This is the new plastic ride card that will replace paper carnival tickets at the Douglas County Fair this year.
For the first time ever, the Douglas County Fair will offer discounted carnival ride tickets ahead of the August 5-9 event. And the carnival is going plastic, not paper.
Residents will be able to buy 50 tickets for $20. During the fair, carnivalgoers receive 40 tickets for the same price.
You get 10 ride tickets free, Fairgrounds Director Harold Phillips said this week.
Tickets are now available online at www.douglasfairgrounds.com or at the fair business office located next to the main entrance at 2110 S.W. Frear St.
Funtastic Shows, the Portland-based company that operates the carnival at the Douglas County Fair, will be selling plastic ticket cards this year rather than the traditional paper tickets. Each card is printed with a scan stripe, which will be inserted into a card reader installed at each ride.
The scanner will deduct the number of tickets needed for a particular ride and the cards owner will keep using it until all of the rides have been used up. The same ticket cards will be sold both at the fair and during the pre-fair sale.
Scan cards were used at Portlands Cinco de Mayo celebration and at the Rose Festival, which Funtastic also serves. Company officials have reported the system works well and will make it easier both for the vendor and for customers.
The cards will not expire, so they could be used again at next years fair if rides are not used up. They could also be used at other Funtastic venues, including the Lane County Fair and the Oregon State Fair.
Its a forever card, Phillips said.
Discounted ride tickets will be available through July 25, the same date that the pre-fair discount ends for fair admission tickets. Admission tickets bought before the fair are $7 for adults and $3 for children. They are $1 more after July 25. Tickets for senior citizens are $6 all the time.
Tickets bought online can be picked up at the fairgrounds office. Its the same system used for purchasers of reserved concert seat tickets.
The fair will continue to offer unlimited rides on Saturday for children who buy a $16 wristband. The plastic card could be used again after that promotion ends at 5 p.m.
By offering the ride tickets at a discount before the fair, Phillips said he hopes it will ease the burden for families.
It can help them budget for their tickets ahead of time rather than just during fair week, he said.
