JROTC are poppy buddies
Im writing to let people know how I feel about the Roseburg JROTC program. Ive worked with this group of young people for the last five years, and have truly been impressed with them. Both the school and their parents should be very proud of them. These young men and women have been a blessing to me. They are polite and if they say they will help, you can depend on them. Their instructors have done a very good job in teaching them how to be an example to the people they associate with.
I would be delighted to see more students become like they are. Roseburg High School has a program to be proud of. I want to thank all of the students who worked with me during our Buddy Poppy campaign, and a very special thanks to their instructors, Col. Terry Welch and Warrant Officer Chuck Noles.

Olympics athletes thank sponsors
Special Olympics, Douglas County, would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who sponsored our athletes in our annual walk-a-thon. Your commitment to our program helped raise $33,000 (all of which stays in Douglas County for our local program), and puts us on a positive path toward reaching our budget goal for the year. More than 150 people (not all Special Olympics athletes) participated in the walk-a-thon. Unfortunately, Kenny Sherman forgot the hair clippers, but he is still scheduled for a buzz job.
Due to the success of the walk-a-thon, a picnic will be held in late summer for the athletes and their families. Anyone wishing to donate to Special Olympics, Douglas County, can find out how by calling 677-9687 and leaving a message.

Glide fire grateful to its donors
The Glide Rural Fire Protection Department wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the Glide and greater Douglas County community for their support during the recent capital campaign for the department's new fire station. The generosity of the community has helped the department raise over $60,000 from 235 community members. Another $30,000 has been pledged to the department.
Corporate donors include the Lone Rock Timber Company, Weekly Brothers, the Wells Radford Corporation, the Glide Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Ben Serafin Fund, Premier West Bank, the Glide Fire Association, and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Roseburg. The Glide Fire Department is well on their way to raising the $100,000 hoped for from the community. Once again, Glide Fire says Thank you to our entire community for their wonderful generosity and support!

Eastwood staff eases transition
As the school year comes to a close, I wanted to take the opportunity to express my gratitude to all of the staff of Eastwood Elementary School. I was reluctant to move my first grader across the country in the middle of the school year, but she has had a smooth transition thanks to the principal, teachers, office, lunch staff and bus drivers.
In particular, I would like to thank Jeanne Sherwood, who has taught at the school for over three decades. Mrs. Sherwood has been extremely kind and helpful regarding my daughter's academic progress and suggesting extracurricular activities. My daughter was at ease and happy in her class from day one.
The campus is beautiful and we feel very fortunate to be a part of such a great community. Thank you again for the warm welcome.
