4-H Super Sleuth Science Camp lots of fun for kids

Are you still looking for some summer activities for your kids? Well, summertime is camp time! The OSU Extension Service has a variety of great programs to offer the community this summer, including activities at the Douglas County Fair. Before we dive into those, 4-H is excited to be offering a Super Sleuth Science Day Camp for youth from July 16 to 18. The camp will be held at the OSU Discovery Gardens, next to River Forks Park. This is a three-day camp for up to 20 kids who have completed the third, fourth or fifth grades. Participants will learn about forestry and science via hands-on interactive games and activities.

Registration will be accepted until Wednesday. Camp fees are $35 per child; add an extra $1 for children who are not 4-H members. Kids need to bring a sack lunch each day. Afternoon snacks will be provided. This is a great opportunity for your kids to get out into the great outdoors and explore various related topics.

Every day has a different theme — forestry/plants, entomology, and geology. Raini Rippy, OSU forestry instructor, will help take the kids on a tree identification and plant hunt, and we may even encounter the fun and fabulous world of fungi. Youth will also have a chance to go swimming at Umpqua Community College, create arts and crafts and do fun science experiments. On entomology day, we will have a guest speaker on bugs and everyone will go home with their own bug box.

Then, before we know it, it’s fair time. The Extension Service will have a booth at the fair this year. So please stop by and see us. The Extension Service also will be involved in the forestry tent at the fair; this will be set up between Douglas Hall and the Exhibit Hall. The tent will provide a variety of kid-friendly crafts and activities. We are hoping to have animal exhibits, Smokey Bear, paper making, birdhouse making, wildlife puzzles and much more. Stop by with your kids and check it out.

When the school year begins, the 4-H Afterschool Program will be organizing exciting trips for non-school days. Check with our office or watch our Web site for more information.
