Hanson: Drives in two runs with first HR of 2008
CORVALLIS Chad Hanson is starting to heat up at the plate. The Dr. Stewarts pitcher and utilityman didnt get any at bats this spring at Linn-Benton Community College and only had a handful more this summer going into Tuesday night.
But Hanson getting the start at third base broke out with a two-run home run to highlight the Docs 7-2 win over Richeys Market at Hansen Stadium.
He got a fastball to hit in the zone and did it, Docs coach Scott Shaver said. Everybody loves to get up and hit and Chad was eager to get up there.
The Docs (17-2) have now won 12 straight games dating back to June 18. The Docs swept Corvallis this season, taking a 7-4 decision over the Marketmen on June 12.
A.J. Royal nearly joined Hanson in the homer club in the fifth, but his deep fly inexplicably got stuck between outfield wall pads and was ruled an RBI ground-rule double. In the next at bat, Hanson left no doubt, clearing the wall in left to drive in a puzzled Royal.
Justin Counts Hansons teammate at LBCC doubled in a run and went 2-for-4. Bo Younker went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Mitchell Huff and Boone Farrington drove runs. Johnny Farrington went 2-for-4.
Dakota Cavens picked up his team-best fifth win of the season, pitching 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The right-hander from Roseburg came on with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth and induced a popout.
Dakota Mathis came one out from being eligible for the win, going 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run. The Oakland graduate worked out of bases-loaded jams in the first and third innings and left with a 3-1 lead.
Dakota came in and did a good job, Shaver said. He worked himself out of trouble and kept his composure. Anytime you limit a team to two runs youve got a chance to beat them.
The Marketmen (14-10) got a walk and back-to-back hits, including an RBI by Dallas Highs Spencer Crepeaux in the bottom of the first. The Docs answered with three runs in the top of the second and never trailed again.
Dr. Stewarts has trailed in 11 of its 17 wins this season.
Corvallis stranded 16 runners on the night. Nate Williams had three hits and Crepeaux two and Kellen Sparkes drove in a run. Jake Likewise (0-1) took the loss.
The Docs continue a road swing Thursday with a 4 p.m. doubleader against the Springfield Titans (10-8).
