Where there are rodeos, there’s Gow

Bailey Gow — Roseburg’s latest national rodeo champion — was where you would have expected the cowgirl to be when reached on her cell phone Wednesday.

At the rodeo arena, of course. The 22-year-old had just completed a couple of runs in barrel racing at the St. Paul Rodeo, one of Oregon’s marquee rodeos.

Gow, a 2004 Roseburg High graduate, will be rodeoing all weekend — competing at Eugene, Yoncalla, Molalla and La Pine. She was at Vancouver, Wash., Thursday.

“I guess I’ve worked my whole life to rodeo,” she said. “It’s my lifestyle ... it’s what I love.”

It has been nearly two weeks since Gow experienced her biggest rodeo thrill to date as a senior for New Mexico State University, winning the barrel racing title at the 60th annual College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.

Gow finished with an aggregate time of 57.92 seconds over four runs, edging runner-up Nellie Williams of University of Nevada Las Vegas (57.95).

Gow and her horse, Aprils Honor, got better with each round, clocking runs of 14.64, 14.54, 14.52 and 14.22. Their performance in the short-go was the second-fastest individual barrel racing time at the CNFR.

“I had nothing to lose,” Gow said of her mindset on the final run. “I wanted to keep her tight (around the barrels) and she worked really good. I was very happy (with the run), but I didn’t think it was that fast.”

What a fitting finale to a productive collegiate rodeo career. Gow became the second Roseburg cowgirl in four years to win a national barrel racing title, joining Nataly Tatone (UNLV, 2005) on the elite list of champions.

“A perfect end to an era,” Gow said. “It was really special because the team did so well. We had four national champions and I’m glad I got to be a part of it.”

The New Mexico State women finished second behind UNLV in the team standings. Gow, who finished 20th in breakaway roping, placed fourth in all-around. The barrel racing title was unexpected, she said, coming off a third-place regular season finish in the Grand Canyon Region.

“It wasn’t an exceptional senior year by any means,” she said. “I hit a lot of barrels.”

Gow was proud of Aprils Honor, a 14-year-old who received the women’s American Quarter Horse Association Horse of the Year award.

“She was awesome,” Gow said. “She got a tear in her hoof wall and we kept her out of action for a month. She was really fresh (for the CNFR) and held up well. I have a really nice horse and she takes care of me.”

The pair teamed up for a sixth-place finish at the Sisters Rodeo June 13-15, winning $1,098.40.

Gow graduated in May from New Mexico State, located in Las Cruces. She enjoyed her four years there.

“A great experience ... no regrets at all,” she said. “Four years of fun. Being far away from home makes you grow up. I got a great education and a great rodeo experience, and I met a lot of friends I’ll have the rest of my life.”

OVER TO SOFTBALL

Roseburg’s Mikayla Endicott was the youngest player selected to play for the Portland All-Stars, a team of current and former collegiate softball players with Northwest connections, against the United States Olympic Team on Tuesday night at Erv Lind Stadium in Portland.

Portland State head coach Amy Hayes will lead the All-Star team, which comprises 19 players from 13 college programs across the country. Oregon is among the pre-Olympic tour stops for Team USA.

“I think it’ll be fun,” Endicott said from Aurora, where she was pitching for the Washington LadyHawks Gold traveling team in the Colorado Fireworks Tournament. “It’s a great opportunity.”

Oregon State will be represented by junior first baseman/outfielder Dani Chisholm (Barlow), junior pitcher/utility Kelly Dyer (Churchill) and sophomore first baseman/outfielder Erin Guzy (Southridge). The Ducks will have senior outfielder Sari-Jane Jenkins (South Salem) and Endicott, a two-time Oregon Class 6A Pitcher of the Year who graduated from Roseburg in June.

Other former Oregon prep standouts on the roster include Bradley senior pitcher Ashley Birdsong (Taft of Lincoln City), Mississippi junior infielder Lauren Grill (Tualatin), Utah State junior catcher Simone Hubbard (South Medford), Utah State sophomore outfielder Megan McDonald (McNary of Keizer), Long Island sophomore catcher/outfielder Mariesha Marker (McNary) and Utah State junior outfielder Michelle Workman (Tigard).
