Priestley: Hits home run, three doubles in victory
ALBANY Dr. Stewarts may need to call in a cardiologist for its American Legion baseball followers.
The Docs have played from behind all summer, but Thursdays 16-11 win over Mid-Valley was the most heart-palpatating. The Rockets scored the games first seven runs and led 11-2 going into the eighth inning before the Docs (20-5) stole the game with a whopping 13-run inning.
We pride ourselves in playing every out of every inning and the kids took that to the wall last night, Docs coach Scott Shaver said.
Every Dr. Stewarts batter in the order came to the plate twice in the fateful inning, including shortstop Boone Farrington, who doubled, singled and drove in four runs. Mid-Valley (9-20) hurt itself with five walks in the inning, and the Docs cashed in on all of them. Dr. Stewarts has trailed in 14 of their 20 wins this season.
We hit the ball very hard all game long, it just finally stopped being right at people, Shaver said. You mix in the walks and there you go.
First baseman Derek Priestley had a career game, hitting a home run to go with three doubles. The Roseburg High junior-to-be finished 4-for-6 with 11 total bases and three RBIs.
Farrington finished 4-for-6, left fielder Mitchell Huff was 3-for-4 and second baseman Johnny Farrington was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Center fielder Justin Counts doubled.
Vince Ampi (1-0) took to the mound in the sixth and finished the game out, giving up a run on four hits. Mid-Valley had battered the Docs pitching up to that point, getting 10 runs off 13 hits.
The Roseburg High junior-to-be switches between the Docs and single-A Pepsi, where he is 3-0 on the mound and a catcher.
Vince is a guy I have absolute faith in putting in the game at any point, Shaver said. He does a super job whether were putting him behind the plate or on the mound.
The Rockets got home runs from Josh Bitterman and Nate Hiebert. John Pratt doubled three times and Jesse Lear-Konnold had two doubles. Nathan Boone limited the Docs to two runs through six innings but was left with a no-decision while Will Bussard took the loss.
The Docs return to Legion Field tonight to face Klamath Falls in a 6 p.m. doubleheader. It will be the first of two key Area 4 doubleheaders, as Medford visits on Saturday night.
This gives us some momentum, Shaver said. The last two games weve hit the ball hard and I think were ready to go for a fourth.
