Local man earns doctorate
Joseph Gilbuena recently earned his doctorate in optometry from Forest Grove University. He plans to practice in the Portland area. He also studied a double major in biology and botany at Oregon State University.
He is the son of Joseph and Sherry Gilbuena of Roseburg.

Students to learn health care life
Four Douglas County high students will have an up close look at the life of a health care provider this summer.
The MedStars Honors Program selected Tyler Harwood, Sutherlin, Janessa Johnson, Elkton, Annie Johnson, Myrtle Creek, and Shantelle Barke, Roseburg, to spend four days at the Oregon Health and Science University. The students will join others from around the state to sample life as a health care student and health care provider.
College students who participated in MedStars in the past will mentor the students. They will be introduced to medical research, learn in a hands on dental lab and observe medical technology in action.

Kira Oerman of Sutherlin recently earned her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Oregon State University.
ROSEBURG
Teachers award scholarship
The Roseburg Education Association awarded Roseburg High School senior Eric Fullerton with a $1,000 scholarship.
The association chose Fullerton based on scholarship, community service and personal growth.
Fullerton plans to study epidemiology and pathology.

Bixby wins FFA scholarship
Rob Bixby has won a $1,000 Fastline Publications Scholarship from the National FFA Organization. Bixby is a member of the Days Creek Charter School FFA chapter.
He is one of 1,641 recipients chosen from more than 8,000 applications. Selections were based on academics, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural experience and future goals.

Crawford makes Linfield deans list
Maggie M. Crawford of Oakland, a senior at Linfield College, was named to the spring semester dean's list. In order to be named to the dean's list, students must complete 12 graded credits and be in the top 10 percent of their class.
WINCHESTER
Powell joins honor society
Vernice Powell was recently inducted into the Alpha Sigma Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Umpqua Community College.
Powell is majoring in human services; she is the daughter of Wayne and Virginia Powell of Roseburg and is married to Jammie Porter of Sutherlin.
Phi Theta Kappa recognizes the academic achievement of two-year college students, who must rank in the top 20 percent of their class and be invited to join. They must maintain high academic standing during their enrollment.

Wilkinson scholarships set
The Willie Wilkinson Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded its final seven scholarships this year, for a total of 22 since 2005 for Glide students that have participated in soccer or wrestling.
This years recipients include:
Jacob Brown, a soccer player planning to major in engineering in Oregon State University;
Sara Smaha, a soccer player planning to major in biology at OSU;
Jessica Hatley, a soccer player planning to major in nursing at Southwestern Oregon Community College;
Kyle Fields, a wrestler planning to study criminal justice or education at Clackamas Community College;
Amanda Rummel, a soccer player planning to study nursing at Oregon Institute of Technology;
Brock Halter, a wrestler planning to study criminal justice at Umpqua Community college;
Lauren Wilkinson, a soccer player planning to study photography and photojournalism at Portland Community College.
Lauren Wilkinson is the sister of Willie Wilkinson, in whose honor the scholarship fund was established.
Willie Wilkinson died in an accident when he was 19. He attended Dear Creek School and Glide Middle School before graduating from Glide High School in 2004. At the time of his death, he was working at Glide Lumber and had been accepted into the United States Coast Guard.
Family and friends decided to give out scholarships until Lauren graduated.
