Roseburg cancer center receives third accreditation

The Community Cancer Center recently received accreditation by the American College of Radiology for the third consecutive time.

The Roseburg center is only one of two radiation oncology facilities in the state that has been accredited by the college, said Mel Cheney, the center’s executive director. Each accreditation is for a three-year period.

The Community Cancer Center applied for accreditation to assure patients that they are receiving top-of-the-line care in their own community, Cheney said.

“It assures people that when they go to your facility for treatment they will be receiving a standard of care — a level of quality services — as determined by an outside agency,” he said.

To become accredited, the center had to submit an application to the college, proving that the center meets requirements and standards set by the American College of Radiology, Cheney said. The college then sends a team of professionals to the center to review all aspects of operation. The team spends a few days reviewing a sample of patients’ charts, diagnoses, prescribed medications and delivery of treatment to patients, Cheney said. The center’s equipment is also reviewed, he said.

The accreditation team suggested that the center implement high dose rate brachytherapy, which requires inserting radioactive sources into a tumor. Currently, the center offers low-dose rate brachytherapy, Cheney said.

The center will implement the high-dose program and purchase the needed equipment within the next year, once the center is moved to its new location near Mercy Medical Center, he said.

The opening of the 33,000-square-foot, three-story building that will replace the current center on Umpqua Street has been delayed because the permit process took longer than anticipated, Cheney said. The opening is now scheduled for April 2009.
