Ampi: Hits home run and triple in Game 2 loss
MEDFORD Dr. Stewarts took a big step towards qualifying for the American Legion state playoffs Friday, knocking off Area 4 champion Medford, but had to settle for another split.
The Docs handed the Mustangs only their eighth loss of the summer by winning the opener, 6-3. But a sixth-inning comeback went for naught as Medford won the second game, 9-5.
Brandon Jackson (7-0) allowed 11 hits but only three runs in a complete-game effort. The Docs gave Jackson a 4-0 lead to work with, scoring twice in the top of the first and adding single runs in the second and fourth.
Medford pulled within 4-3, as Jared Smith hit an RBI double in the fourth and later came home on an error, and Dustin Smith hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth. I might have been worse, as the Docs turned a double play with the bases loaded in the third inning.
With the Mustangs bearing down, the Docs added a pair of key insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Jordan Guthrie doubled and went to third after A.J. Royals single. Bryson Norton then put Dr. Stewarts up 5-3 with an RBI single that chased Medford starter Sam Gaviglio. Jered Stoffal hit a sacrifice fly off reliever Sam Lewis to score Royal and cap scoring.
Jackson worked around a pair of two-out singles in the bottom half of the inning, retiring Jared Smith the would-be tying run with a fielders choice.
Dr. Stewarts rallied in Game 2 after falling behind 5-1 in the fifth inning, getting a two-run home run by catcher Vince Ampi after Guthrie doubled home a pair of runs in the sixth. Ampi also tripled in his best hitting performance as a Doc.
But the Mustangs pushed across the winning run, and three more, in the sixth. Dustin Smith scored from third on a dropped third-strike call with Griff Boyd at the plate. Logan Odom later hit a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch for three insurance runs.
Dakota Cavens (6-1) took his first loss of the season in relief of Matt Thomson. Jared Smith (5-1) picked up the win, also in relief.
Boone Farrington hit doubles in each game.
