Knee injury ends career of Ducks’ goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield

SOCCER

EUGENE — Senior goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield, Oregon’s all-time leader in wins and shutouts, announced Thursday that she is retiring from the sport after suffering a major knee injury in July.

Chatfield tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee while playing on the field during a training session on July 2. It was the third major injury in less than two years for the senior from Eugene. She underwent surgery on Friday. Typical rehabilitation period for an ACL injury is seven to nine months.

“It was a hard decision to make and it took a while to come to it, but it’s the right decision for me,” said Chatfield. “I’m going to graduate in June and I’m not going to lie, the injuries have been tough.

“It’s very sad to close this chapter of my life a little earlier than I planned, but I’m also excited to start another one. I’ve been looking forward to graduation and doing a lot of things that I’ve put on hold for a long time to concentrate on soccer.”

Chatfield suffered a broken right hand in a match versus New Hampshire in the fall of 2006 and missed five games. She also sustained a broken left arm in a 2007 spring scrimmage against Portland and missed most of the spring season. Additionally, Chatfield suffered concussions during both her sophomore and junior years.

In spite of the injuries, in just three seasons the Churchill High graduate set Oregon career records for wins with 25, and shutouts with 16. She also finishes her career tops in goals allowed average at 1.34 per game and third in saves with 233.
