NORTH BEND The Pepsi Bottlecaps came up two wins short of a state title, falling to Ashland 12-8 Tuesday in an American Legion A state tournament game that decided North Medfords opponent in the championship game later that day.
The Bottlecaps (25-12) rallied from a 5-1 deficit and took an 8-7 lead in the seventh inning at Clyde Allen Field. Ashlands Ian Kendall hit a two-run double in the bottom of the inning with one out and the Pilots posted three more in the eighth to pull away.
Pepsi, short on fresh arms, started Vince Ampi and used Josh Davis and Jay Tovey in relief. Ampi gave up five hits and five runs in three innings of work. Davis entered in the fourth, allowing four hits and fanning two before Tovey took over in the eighth.
We played hard and just ran out of gas, Pepsi coach Richie Charles said. The kids did a good job.
Ashland beat Pepsi twice in the tournament, also winning 11-6 on Friday.
Blayne Sterling hit a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning. Reid Martin finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the fourth to score Micah Audiss, who went 2-for-5, and Sterling.
Kendall was 3-for-4 and Garrett Tygerson went 3-for-5 for Ashland. Starting pitcher Luke Stone pitched five innings.
