Weekend's best bets for Aug. 22 - 24



CANYONVILLE PIONEER DAYS — This South County town starts the celebration today at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Park in Canyonville and continues with the party at 10 a.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The weekend’s activities include live entertainment, booths, food vendors, a barbecue, a pie auction, bingo, a cake walk, talent show finals at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. lawn mower races Saturday. There will be kids’ games at noon Sunday. OREGON LAB COAST BAND: EVOLUTION — Don’t miss another free concert at 6:30 p.m. tonight on the waterfront at the Umpqua Discovery Center, 409 River Front Way, Reedsport. Big Band music and vocals. Free summer concert series; food vendors on site, no pets, smoking or alcohol. 271-4816.

INAUGURAL SHEEPDOG CHAMPIONSHIP TRIAL — Round ’em up dogies! Check out the action beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and at 9 a.m. Sunday at Seven Springs Ranch, 10879 Buckhorn Road, Glide. The trials will feature nearly 50 of the top herding teams in the Northwest. This year’s event will directly benefit the Glide Rural Fire District. Tickets are $5 and are available at the gate or may be purchased by calling 496-3123.

ROTARY DUCK RACE FOR CHILDREN — Come out for a good cause at 10 a.m. Saturday at River Forks Park in Roseburg. Activities include a dunk tank, face painting, tattoos, a duck egg hunt, coloring contest, sand art, watermelon seed spitting contest and snow cones, ice cream, cotton candy, popcorn and a hot dog stand. The duck race will begin at noon. The grand prize is a 2008 Chevy Cobalt. All ticket sales from the duck race go to ending child abuse and neglect. Ducks are $10 and outlets are at Clint Newell, Macy’s, Bi-Mart, Cascade Credit Union, Sherm’s. 957-7777.

HOT UMPQUA NIGHTS — For an evening of quilts, art and good company, head out at 5 p.m. Saturday to the Elkton Community Education Center, 15850 W. Highway 38. Wine, buffet refreshments, opening of Elkton Quilt Show and art exhibit from Painting in the Park Day, all on the greenhouse patio. $2 suggested donation to benefit reconstruction of historic Fort Umpqua. 584-2692.

MUSIC IN THE VINEYARD — Wine and music are friends. See for yourself from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Henry Estate Winery, 687 Hubbard Creek Road, Umpqua. Music by David Helfand and David Burnham, a Celtic harpist and violinist. Kristin Riley will also perform with members of the Douglas County Youth Orchestra. Kickoff to the 2008-09 Umpqua Symphony Association season. Tickets are $10 per person.

BENEFIT POKER TOURNAMENT — Try your hand at cards and support literacy beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Umpqua Valley Arts Center, 1624 W. Harvard Ave. Altrusa of Roseburg holds a “Read ’Em and Smile” benefit poker tournament. A Texas Hold ’Em, no limit format. The cost to buy in is $80. Prizes of prepaid Visa cards will be awarded to first through seventh places, depending on the number of registrants.
