Jack W. Cummins



Jack W. Cummins, age 85, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2008. He was born October 31, 1922, in Elgin, Oregon, to Guy and Virena (Keffer) Cummins. His child hood was spent in eastern Oregon, where he attended school, graduating from Grant Union High School in John Day. Jack went on to Oregon State University where he joined the Army Air Force ROTC. He later entered the the Army Air Force and received special training in meteorology at the University of Washington and U.C.L.A. As a commissioned officer he served our country in the Pacific Theatre during W.W.II. He later joined the Air Force Reserve in Roseburg and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was united in marriage to Norma Ogle on December 18, 1942 in Lakeview, Oregon. He and Norma spent most of their 65 years of marriage in Roseburg, where they raised their children. Jack went to work with his dad and uncle as a timber cutter after getting out of the Air Corps. Later, he would co-own 'The Drain Saw Shop' in Drain, Oregon with his good friend, (Clancey) Chartier. Jack's children, Lynda and Kent remember that their Dad loved,

family; friends; crosswords; gaining knowledge; reading; history; golf; bowling; fishing;; hunting; camping; gardening; tending to his fruit trees and sharing his produce and fruit with relatives and friends. He also loved good food; pizza and the challenge of fixing or repairing anything! Jack was supportive of and attended all his children's and grandchildren's activities. He had a good sense of humor , was down to earth and practical. He like helping out family and friends. 'Pop' really enjoyed his two grandsons, Tony and Evan. He is survived by his devoted wife, Norma of Roseburg, as well as his children, Lynda Fowler of Roseburg and Kent Cummins and his wife, Meg of Portland, Oregon. He also leaves a sister, Phyllis Newton of Ashland, Oregon. He has two grandsons, Anthony Fowler (who is serving in the US Marine Corps, and stationed in San Diego, California) and his wife, Logan and Evan Fowler of Los Angeles, California. Jack is also survived by a great-grandson, (who will be arriving soon), Jackson James Fowler. He has eight nieces and nephews and an aunt, Katherine Straus. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife's parents, Jim and Nellie Ogle. Friends and family are invited to a graveside memorial service at the Roseburg VA National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m, Friday, August 29, 2008. Officiating will be Pastors, Dwayne and Vicky Brown of the Roseburg First Presbyterian Church. Military rites will be offered by the Veterans Of Foreign Wars, District Twelve Honor Guard. Following the service all are invited to the church, located at 823 SE Lane Street for a reception and refreshments. Memorial donations are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church Scholarship Program or the FISH Pantry. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor's Family Chapel.
