Philip Edward “Slim” Gallaty

A memorial service for Philip Edward “Slim” Gallaty will be held at Sutherlin Christian Assembly Church in Sutherlin, Oregon. Slim passed at his home on Thursday, August 21, 2008, with his wife by his side. He was 95. Mr. Gallaty was born on December 18, 1912, in Cylon, Wisconsin, to John and Lydia (Gowin) Gallaty. One of 13 children, he left school after the fourth grade to begin working in order to help feed his family during the depression. At 14 he left home and began working as a cattle wrangler, traveling from Montana to Texas. He worked for many years as a logger in the woods of Michigan using horses to move the logs. He served his country during World War II at the age of 30. After the war, he spent the next 20 years working in logging, rodeos and as a stunt horseman in western filmed in Montana. He moved to the Northwest in 1967, settling in Vernonia, Oregon, where he met his wife, Karen-marrying her in 1975. In Vernonia he worked as a rancher raising horses and cattle until his retirement in 1985. Finally settling in Oakland, Oregon, he enjoyed visiting with his kids and grandkids until his death. He was preceded in death by one son, Philip in 1968 and one daughter, Virginia in 1937 and his beloved horse major in 1981. He is survived by his wife; four daughters and two sons-in-laws, Eleanor Savely of Birkenfield, Oregon; Tania Lee of Sutherlin; Heidi and Ben Herbert of Oakland; and Jamie Lee Whitmore of Forest Grove, Oregon; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Patty Gallaty of Menomonie, Wisconsin and Rodney Gallaty of Phoenix, Arizona. He also is survived by his 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and adopted family.
