Connie Grady is on a mission to get women and girls healthy in Roseburg and Douglas County, one elliptical-machine step at a time.

A 13-year internal medicine physician and a native of Roseburg, Grady purchased Contours Express on Northwest Stewart Parkway in April and then moved it across the street next to her physician’s office, The Wellness Clinic, only to reopen it as Women’s Express.

The women’s gym is modeled after the Mayo Clinic, Grady said, bringing together a mix of exercise, medicine and salubriousness.

“It’s really not about being skinny but about being healthy,” Grady said.

Grady said that rather than waiting until they are sick to see a doctor, peopleshould focus on healthy lifestyles to avoid the doctor and help “downsize America.”

“That’s what my gym is all about,” she said.

The three-room gym helps train women and girls with heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, among other ailments. It also has a circuit-training room and a yoga floor.

Membership for Women’s Express, 2395 N.W. Stewart Parkway, is $35. However, discounts or reimbursements are also available through insurance for those who are suffering from an ailment.

The gym is open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL BUY: Despite the tepid local real estate market, a developer from Eugene is betting baby boomers with capital to spare will purchase up to 71 townhouses and 25 single-family homes at Fairway Estates, inside Sutherlin’s Umpqua Golf Resort.

Sizes of the townhouses in the gated community will range from 1,430 square feet to 1,560 square feet, featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a den and a two-car garage. They also will feature hardwood floors, a granite kitchen, bathroom countertops, decks and landscaping. The going prices will range from $255,000 to $275,000 for two different models.

With focus on townhouses first, Eugene developer Ross Murry is charging $83 a month for landscaping maintenance and other fees. Single-family homes will be phased in second. Their monthly maintenance fees will be $38.

“There is not a gated community like that in Roseburg,” said John Kennedy, project manager at Fairway Estates.

The targeted buyers, Kennedy said, are retiring baby boomers looking for a second home in Douglas County that requires little maintenance. Young couples have also given some attention to the townhouses, he added, but buyers typically will be “snowbirds” who head to Arizona or elsewhere south for the winter.

“There’s still a lot of people who like Douglas County, but don’t want to be here in the winter,” he said.

Two models of townhouses will be available at Fairway Estates, ranging in price from $255,000 to $275,000. They come with a view of the fairways and greens in all directions.

Kennedy said there are many similarities between Fairway Estates and other developments in the Medford and Eugene areas, but it’s not uncommon for those townhouses and their monthly charges to cost twice as much.

HOT OFF THE PRESS: After winning first place back in March for the 2008 Web Offset Association Print Competition, The News-Review — which also won first place in 2006 — qualified for the 2008 Premier Print Awards Competition and won that also.

And that’s no small feat, said pressroom manager Rod Carlson.

The judges agree.

“Of the more than 4,220 entries received this year, the work of The News-Review was chosen as that which exemplifies some of the highest standards in the printing industry,” read a July 31 letter to The News-Review and Carlson.

Carlson manages the pressroom with four employees. The accolade, he said, is all the more impressive since the workers are printing with equipment from the 1970s rather than modern equipment.

CORRECTIONS: It was reported a week ago that All State Real Estate had merged with ERA Franchise Systems LLC when in fact, All State Real Estate is now a franchisee of ERA Franchise Systems. Make sense?

Co-owner Paul Haddock said the move provides All State with a connection to global technology and a more diverse economy.

“People are moving all over the world,” he said.

All State is also owned by Melinda Walls.

Also, Hire Calling Staffing Solutions can be contacted at 673-3200. A wrong number was reported incorrectly last week.
