County teams struggle in season openers

Phoenix 7

Douglas 0

PHOENIX — The Pirates scored a touchdown off a Trojan turnover in the first quarter and it held up in a non-conference game at Jack Woodward Stadium.

Douglas fumbled the ball away on its own 28, then Chris Kammel connected with Joe Backen on a 12-yard TD pass. The Trojans never penetrated inside the Phoenix 20 in the contest.

Kammel completed 12 of 27 passes for 160 yards and was intercepted twice. The Trojans got good defensive games from cornerbacks Bryson Norton (two interceptions) and Jered Stoffal, linebacker Mike Ruppert and noseguard Tim Bellando.

“We played hard. They have a nice club, but we also didn’t help ourselves,” said Douglas coach Joe Polamalu. “Defensively we played a tough game, but offensively we couldn’t get any production.”

The Trojans will host Elmira next Friday in a non-league game.

MURPHY — Todd Woodrum rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown to help the Mustangs to a non-league win over the Lancers in the season opener for both clubs.

Steven Powell added 94 yards rushing a pair of TDs for Hidden Valley, which led 19-7 at halftime. Jake Hill scored S.U.’s lone TD on a 65-yard run in the second period and led the team with nine carries for 78 yards on the night.

Triton Crane added 38 yards rushing for the Lancers. Sophomore quarterback Josh Kennedy left the game in the second quarter after injuring his right index finger and senior Ryan Smedley, who South Umpqua coach Kevin Hubbard was planning not to use Friday due to a hip injury sustained in practice, directed the Lancers the remainder of the way.

Hubbard said Ky Schoonhoven, a cornerback, and Crane, the free safety, played well defensively.

“I have no complaints with the effort,” Hubbard said. “We weren’t very physical and at times didn’t tackle well. But the kids didn’t quit and did some good things.”

The Lancers will host 3A Myrtle Point in a non-league game next Friday at Loghry Field.

Central Linn 8

Reedsport 6

REEDSPORT — Caleb Scott’s 10-yard touchdown pass from Delton Murray with 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter lifted Central Linn over host Reedsport in the season opener for both teams.

The Braves took an early lead on Cory Christofferson’s 5-yard touchdown in the second quarter. But Central Linn’s Will Marchbanks tackled a Reedsport running back in the end zone for a safety that proved to be the difference.

Reedsport didn’t complete a pass after starting quarterback Adam Chase was taken to the hospital with a shoulder injury in the second quarter. The Braves were able to neutralize the Cobra passing attack with three interceptions, including two by Dylan Chudy.

Perrydale 54

Days Creek 46

SALEM — Daniel Lee passed for 502 yards and seven touchdowns as the host Pirates defeated the Wolves in an eight-man game at West Salem High School.

Blake Barnes caught seven passes for 167 passes and two TDs for Perrydale, which led 26-16 at halftime. Days Creek finished with 428 yards total offense in its season opener, 219 coming on the ground.

Bronson Owens led the Wolves with 142 yards rushing on 27 carries and scored two TDs. Brandon Lane, who sat out the first half for disclipinary reasons, scored three TDs and had 50 yards rushing. Quarterback Travis Fuller completed 5 of 8 passes for 209 yards and two scores, and added a 5-yard scoring run.

“This was a winnable game, but we played lethargic part of the game. We lost the game yesterday on the practice field,” surmised Days Creek coach Gene Forman. “Perrydale is a pretty good club. We did a lot of good things offensively, but defensively we were pretty pathetic. We had problems with pass coverage and that’s probably my fault.

“We have to learn to play a little better as a team.”

The Wolves open Skyline League next Friday, visiting Powers.
